David Gerard Kernick

December 9, 1960- December 17, 2024

With great sadness, we announce our brother David's sudden passing on December 17, 2024 in Dartmouth at the age of 64.

Though born in Scarborough, David spent most of his life in Nova Scotia. An avid hunter and fisherman in his younger years, Giant’s Lake held a special place in his heart. He spent many hours walking through the forest and enjoying Mother Nature. David believed deeply in the wolf pack’s sacred bond. Where the

strength of the pack was measured by how it cared for its weakest members. That is how he lived his life.

David was a kind and generous man who helped anyone he could even when he had little to give. His kindness was evident in the quiet dignity with which he carried himself and how he treated strangers respectfully. He would always say that no one was better than the next. David’s kindness toward his nieces and nephews was a lesson on how to treat others. He wrote several short stories using their names which led to his affectionate nickname “Big D”.

David’s life had many challenges but he found happiness with his wife Joan before sadly losing her in a car accident. While their time together was short, they created many wonderful memories that helped him get through the tough times.

A source of pride for David was his time in the militia serving with the Princess Louise Fusiliers in Halifax. Even though his regular force military career with the PPCLI was cut short by a motorcycle accident, he was very honored to say he had served his country. Throughout his life, David worked with the Commissionaires continuing his desire to serve.

Even with his health troubles of late, David loved traveling and visiting his family. His time with his brothers brought him great joy and he loved relaxing by the pool talking about old times. Famous for his memory, David could remember events from long ago and would remind us often when we got the details wrong.

Though an unexpected cardiac incident took him from us too soon, his memory lives on in his brothers Richard (Susan), Michael (Debbie), and John (Angela). Nieces Nicole, Ashley, Sheena, and Chelsey. Nephews Daniel, Matthew, Alexander, Riley, and Brendan. Also great-nieces and nephews Quinn, Lincoln, Vada, Henley, Reeve, and Camryn. David shared life-long friendships with Rob Forbes, Dave Bowen, and Dave McDonald who were more brothers than friends.

David was predeceased by his parents David and Mary and his wife Joan.

The family would like to thank the staff at Woodside Manor in Dartmouth for taking wonderful care of David.

Cremation has taken place and a burial service will be at a later date in Sydney Mines with interment with David’s parents.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Soldier On Fund or a local food bank.
