Quietly, at home at the Berkeley on Pepperell on December 1st, 2023, Dr. Alistair Munro, beloved husband of Mary (Stewart), loving father of Sharon Munro (Peter) and Kirsten Clark (Donald), doting grandfather of Cairistiona (Devan) and Freya and proud great-grandfather of Maisie.
Alistair was born in Glasgow, Scotland. He was educated at Allan Glen’s School and Glasgow University, graduating in medicine in 1956. After post-graduate experience in various centres in England, he became Professor and Head of Psychiatry at the University of Liverpool. In 1975 he was appointed Professor of Psychiatry at the Toronto General Hospital and in 1982 moved to Halifax to be Professor of Psychiatry at Dalhousie University, working at the Abbie Lane, Camp Hill and Nova Scotia Hospitals. He retired in 1998, spending a happy retirement with Mary, family and friends.
In the latter part of his career, Alistair became an authority on Delusional Disorder and in 1999 wrote a textbook on this subject which is still widely quoted. He published many other scholarly books and articles and also became known in Canadian medical circles for many light hearted articles in The Medical Post and several other magazines.
Alistair never lost his Scottish accent but identified as a proud Canadian. His career in two countries was a fulfilling one and his retirement in Nova Scotia was a source of much happiness.
The family would like to thank the wonderful nurses and staff at the Berkeley on Pepperell, the many VON nurses who helped with Alistair’s care, Continuing Care, and Dr. Karstan Gehrig.
Arrangements have been entrusted to A. L. Mattatall Funeral Home in Dartmouth where a private family service will be held to celebrate Alistair’s life. If so desired, donations to the VON in Alistair’s name are welcomed.
