Scott Velazquez Cunningham, 56, of Dartmouth, passed away on Sunday, August 28, 2022 at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston following a battle with melanoma. He was the husband of Lisa M. Velazquez Cunningham with whom he shared 26 years of marriage.
Born in Somerville, MA, a son of the late Robert and Naureen (Tracey) Cunningham, he had resided in Henniker, New Hampshire for 20 years before moving to Dartmouth a year ago.
He was a graduate of Bishop Feehan High School in Attleboro and received an Associate’s degree in Criminal Justice from Hesser College in Manchester, NH.
Scott proudly served in the United States Marine Corp. during the Gulf War. He served in Operation Desert Shield/Storm and was the recipient of the National Defense Service Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal, Sea Service Deployment Ribbon and the Combat Action Ribbon.
He most recently worked as a heavy equipment operator for the Town of Dartmouth Department of Public Works. While in New Hampshire, he was a correctional officer, attaining the rank of Lieutenant, for the Hillsborough County Department of Corrections retiring after 32 years.
Scott enjoyed nature, fishing, hiking, camping and canoeing. He spent quality time at the gym working out and enjoyed watching football, his favorite team being the Nebraska Corn Huskers. Most of all, Scott loved the company of his wife and children whom he adored. He will be missed beyond words.
Surviving in addition to his wife are his children, Myles M.V. Cunningham, Michael S.V. Cunningham, Emma E.V. Cunningham and Molly M.L.V. Cunningham; his siblings, Shawn Cunningham, Ross and Lori Cunningham, Dan and Amy Cunningham, Brian and Doreen Cunningham, step sisters, Abby Conway and Sara Haberstroh; his brothers and sisters-in-law, Leida Velazquez, Mary Pinarreta, Linda and Jesus Sanchez, Luisa and Curtis Nunes and Marcy and Michael Santos; and multiple dearly loved and treasured nieces and nephews. He was father of the late Makenna N.V. Cunningham, brother of the late Robert Cunningham, and son-in-law of the late Maria and Marcelino Velazquez.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, September 3, 2022 from 9-11:30 a.m. in the Waring-Sullivan Home at Dartmouth, 230 Russells Mills Rd., Dartmouth followed by a Funeral Mass at 12 p.m. in St. Mary’s Church, 795 Dartmouth St., Dartmouth.
