Elsie Martin

Born in New Bedford, the daughter of the late Antone and Adelina (Borges) Fontes, she had resided in Dartmouth since 1948. She was a graduate of New Bedford High School, class of 1937.

Mrs. Martin had worked as a secretary in the maternity unit at St. Luke’s Hospital for 35 years, retiring in 1994.

Elsie was a member of the St. Luke’s Retirees, the American Portuguese War Veteran Senior Club of New Bedford, and a former member of the New Bedford Catholic Women’s Club. She loved ballroom dancing with her husband and enjoyed traveling, especially her yearly trip to Aruba.

She is survived by her loving friend and caretaker Ann L. Cottrill, her loving special friend Karen Morin, her loving lifelong friend Lillian Perry, her loving godchild Elsie DosAnjos, and several nieces and nephews.

Her Funeral will be held on Thursday, September 14, 2017 at 10:00AM from the WARING-SULLIVAN HOME at DARTMOUTH, 230 Russells Mills Rd., Dartmouth followed by a Funeral Mass at 11:00AM in St. Mary’s Church, 783 Dartmouth St., Dartmouth. Burial in St. John’s Cemetery. Visiting hours Wednesday 4-7 pm.
