He was born in Mount Kisco, New York on May 14, 1935. He was the youngest son of George Hunter Waterbury Sr. and Anna Mae Lent Waterbury.
Richard is survived by his wife of 55 years, Barbara Czajka Waterbury, his children Patricia Moran and her husband Bryan, Stacey Bielert and her husband Chris, Scott Waterbury and his wife April and his devoted grandchildren Jane Moran, Cade (Ellen) Moran, Alexandra Wyatt, Cody Waterbury, and Tyler Waterbury.
In addition, surviving are his two older brothers Donald Waterbury of Danbury and George Waterbury of Florida, as well as several nieces and nephews.
Richard grew up on the family farm on South King Street in Danbury and then on West King Street in Danbury where he still resided. After graduating from Danbury High School in 1953 he joined the Navy and served for over three years. After discharge he joined his father and brothers in the family carpentry business, George Waterbury and Sons.
What started as a contracted job for the family business resulted in a long career for Richard at Leahy’s Fuels Inc. at the Danbury Fairgrounds. As superintendent of the Big Top, Richard was responsible for creating and maintaining many of the figures and buildings. After leaving Leahy’s he joined the Rizzo Corporation. After retirement, he worked part time for Agriventures Agway.
Throughout his life Richard enjoyed taking care of his property and many animals. He was a lifelong horseman who learned to ride at a very young age. He owned many horses over the years and instilled knowledge of animal care and horseback riding in all of his children.
Richard drove a stock car at the Danbury Racearena in the 1950s and early 1960s. He was a member of the King Street United Church of Christ. In addition to helping build the King Street Volunteer Firehouse as a teenager alongside his father, he later became a volunteer member.
Richard immensely enjoyed being a part of his grandchildren’s lives. He was an almost constant presence on the baseball fields watching his grandsons and their teammates.
Family and friends will be received at Green Funeral Home on November 6, 2017 from 6:00 to 8:00 pm. A memorial service will be held in his honor on Saturday, November 18, 2017 at 10:00 am King Street United Church of Christ, Danbury, Connecticut, 201 South King Street, Danbury, Connecticut 06811.
