Pauline Elizabeth (Tallman) Smith entered the loving arms of our Lord Jesus Christ on August 12, 2015 as she peacefully passed away surrounded by her family. Mrs. Smith was born on March 27, 1929 in Danbury, CT. Pauline, also known as “Peggy”, was the oldest of 15 children born to Paul B. and Pauline E. Tallman (Kearney). She was the wife of the late James S. Smith.
A native Danburian, Pauline attended Danbury public schools and later graduated from Naugatuck Valley Community College (formerly Mattatuck) with a degree in early childhood education. A natural born educator, Mrs. Smith worked for the Danbury Board of Education for more than 30 years. As an early childhood educator, she touched the lives of countless children instilling in them the desire to excel, the importance of self-worth, and the significance of hope. A proponent for and teacher in the Danbury Head Start program, Mrs. Smith was a leader in the area of special needs education. As a young teen, her brilliant soprano voice awarded her a scholarship to Julliard School of Music from the late Ms. Marian Anderson, which Pauline declined in order to help raise her siblings. Nonetheless, Pauline used her gift to praise God at numerous church events and various celebrations. Her exceptional vocals graced the halls of the Danbury Music Center as a long-time member of the Danbury Concert Chorus, where she sung in Handel’s Messiah for more than 30 years.
A resident of Bethel Health Care (BHC) for 10 years, Pauline was a member of the Resident’s Council. She was deemed the honorary mayor at BHC by many, brightening the lives of fellow residents and staff.
