Margaret Ann Sheehan, 83, a pillar of strength and courage who helped redefine struggle in the face of adversity, died Tuesday, October 14, after suffering a long fight with Metabolic Syndrome. During her illness from its early stages throughout the progression, she showed a remarkable ability to hide her pain and fear from friends and loved ones.
Margaret Sheehan was born March 20, 1931, in New York City. She lived with her parents in a five floor walk-up in Upper Manhattan known then as Washington Heights. She attended local schools and was an active member of the neighborhood Catholic Church. She later went on to attend the distinguished training academy of Saint Joseph’s Hospital. Nurses typically received hands on training in hospital settings prior to the administrators moving the program into local colleges and universities. Some criticize the move as leading to a theoretical rather than patient oriented form of care.
She is survived by her daughter Doreen Taliaferro, her son William Sheehan, six grandchildren, Steven, Daniel, Michelle, William Jr., Charlie, and Raymond her sister Ann Reilly and many cousins and friends.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at St. Mary Church, Bethel, on Monday morning at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow in St. Raymond Cemetery, Bronx, NY. Friends may call at the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury, on Sunday from 2:00 to 4:00 and 6:00 to 8:00 p.m.
