Leomena “Lee” Cordeiro Carreiro, 62, of Danbury, CT went home to the Lord on Monday, August 8, 2022, in the company of her loving family and care givers at New York Presbyterian Hospital. Although Lee has been taken away from this world, her loving heart left a beacon of light for all in the community.
Lee was married to her forever sweetheart Jose “Joe” Francisco Carreiro for 42 beautiful years.
Lee was born on January 1, 1960, in São Miguel in the Portuguese archipelago of the Azores to Hermano and Maria Cordeiro who lovingly welcomed their daughter in heaven after her courageous battle with cancer. Accompanied by her parents and brother Mario, the family moved to the United States in 1972 where Lee attended Rogers Park Middle School and Danbury High School. Lee also received an Associate Degree from Katherine Gibbs, where she obtained a proficiency in shorthand, a secretarial skill she was proud of.
Lee proudly worked for 26 years at Union Savings Bank where she was a senior commercial loan administrator and respected by all that she interacted with.
As she went through life, Lee always placed her faith at the forefront of all she did as a loving daughter, sister to her brother Mario Cordeiro (Dinah), sister-in-law to Luis Carreiro (Susana) and Maria Lima (Miguel) wife to Joe, mother to her 3 adoring sons Michael (Jina), Jeffrey and Johnny and proud grandmother to Michelle, Alexander, and Nicholas.
It was this same faith that gave her the strength and will to fight as a lung transplant recipient on September 5, 2012.
Lee dedicated her time through volunteerism at Immaculate Heart of Mary Parish as a catechist and religious education director, fundraiser and social event helper, and up until most recently preparing the weekly church bulletin. Our community sadly lost an important member, and her constant presence will be missed.
In addition, we will miss Lee’s beautiful singing voice which she shared through her love of Portuguese traditions. Most recently, Lee participated as a lead vocalist for Portugal Canta e Dança, a folklore dance group. If you had the pleasure of knowing Lee, then you certainly know how proud she was of her roots and how excited she was to have traveled in the last month to her native Azores with her grandchildren – a cherished memory for all.
Lee’s kind, gentle and compassionate nature will be missed by her extensive family of nephews, nieces, aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends. But with her contagious laugh and spunky side she would tease her husband with her “one drink a year” on her New Year’s Day birthday with a “look the other way Joe” while she enjoyed her cheer of choice.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10:00 am on Friday, August 12, 2022, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Danbury, followed by the Burial Procession to St. Peter Cemetery, Danbury.
Family and friends will be received from 4 pm-8 pm on Thursday, August 11, 2022, at Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury.
Donations can be made in Lee’s memory to the Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, 149 Deer Hill Ave., Danbury, CT 06810, an organization she was passionate about and dedicated so much of her time to.
“For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.” ~ John 3:16
