He was born Joao Barroso Pinto Pires in Vilar de Perdizes, Portugal to the late Sebastiao and Maria Neves Barros in 1922. After a stint in the military during WWII, Joao married and immigrated to Danbury in 1958 bringing along his family of five. As lifelong member of Local Union 675, he worked for various companies including Dolan Construction, Sweeney and O&G.
Joao most enjoyed being outdoors around his home spending countless hours gardening and chopping wood which he stored for colder months and kept him fit. A loving husband and father, he was devoted to his family and his church. On weekends he enjoyed listening to his favorite sport of soccer and especially loved his hometown club the FC of Porto.
Joao is survived by his children: Edward and his wife, Nancy, of Danbury; Anthony and his wife, Debra, of Danbury; Abilio (Bill) and his wife, Amanda, of Atherton, CA; Marie of Raleigh, NC and Lee of Ft. Lauderdale. His beloved grandchildren: Jason, Alex, William, Anne and Kelly. His great-grandchildren: Evan and Emma.
He is predeceased by his sisters Ana, Maria, Joaquina and his brother Antonio.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10am on Thursday, July 16, 2015 at Immaculate Heart of Mary Church, Danbury with the Rev. Jose Brito-Martins, Pastor, officiating. Entombment will follow in St. Peter Cemetery, Danbury.
Friends will be received on Wednesday from 5pm-8pm at the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury.
