Harold was born in Waterbury September 20, 1927, the youngest of Charles Hughes and Margaret (Barry) Hughes’ six boys.
He dropped out of Wilby High School in 1944 to serve with the United States Navy in the Pacific, returning to graduate after World War II. At Wilby, he met Rosemary LaPorta – Peachy – and they married after he graduated from the Bentley School of Accounting and Finance in 1950.
He earned his license as a Certified Public Accountant and became Assistant Controller at Truelove & MacLean, now H&T Waterbury, eventually becoming Chief Financial Officer before retiring in 1995.
Harold was devoted to his family, St Joseph Church and School, the Green Bay Packers, the Tin Can Sailors and the Boy Scouts. He served as Scoutmaster of Troop 33 and then as Treasurer for years after that. He rarely missed a Scout meeting, even after his boys were no longer Scouts.
In retirement he and Rosemary traveled the world, and they traveled the country to visit family and friends. After a lifetime love of bagpipe music Harold joined the Celtic Cross Pipes and Drums, and he marched proudly in parades all around the area, including the Saint Patrick’s Day parade in New York.
He leaves his devoted wife Rosemary, their son Christopher and his wife Norma of North Kingstown, RI; their daughter Eileen Nooney and her husband Gerry of Lillington, NC; their son Brian of Baldwin City, KS; their son Tom and his wife Denise of Milton, VT; their grandson Richard Hughes and his partner Leanne Belen of Northvale, NJ; their grandson SFC Christian Nooney and his wife SSgt Katherine Nooney of Lillington, NC; their grandson David Hughes of North Kingstown, RI; their granddaughter Grey Hughes and grandson Connor Hughes of Baldwin City, KS; their step-grandsons Jason Cayia and Kevin Cayia of Burlington, VT, their step-grandson Landon Cayia of Milton, VT; two great-granddaughters and two step-great-granddaughters.
