Born in New Rochelle NY to Fred Leonard Izzo and Mary Cerreta Izzo on Aug 31, 1936. A proud Marine, Fred graduated from Fairleigh Dickinson University with a degree in Engineering. He worked for Sikorsky Aircraft as a Civil Engineer and Cost Analyst for over 28 years.
He married the love of his life, and childhood neighbor, Josephine D’Elia Izzo on September 30, 1961. In 1965 they welcomed their cherished son Frederick Leonard Izzo III “Ricky”, and in 1968 their darling daughter Jennifer Izzo O’Brien. They moved to New Fairfield in 1973 after falling in love with the area, and Candlewood Lake. Fred loved going out on his boat and entertaining family and friends. One of his favorite places to be; his family and friends hold dear memories of sharing joyful times on the lake.
Fred had a great sense of humor and compassion for others. Often referred to as a great man, a gentleman, who always had a smile, and made everyone he knew feel special. His kind and generous spirit touched many, many lives.
In 1990 he joined the Dreams Come True of Western Connecticut Organization and remained on the board for 20 years; 5 of which he served as President. He tirelessly worked to fulfill hundreds of dreams for children who were seriously ill. His hard work and dedication made a difference in children’s lives and helped to make their dreams come true.
After retirement, he worked as a substitute teacher at New Fairfield High School for 17 years. A job he truly found rewarding, and shared a special equal affection with the students and faculty alike. He would often say, “ If I could do it all over again, I would have pursued a degree in teaching rather than Engineering”.
He is predeceased by his son Ricky Izzo Jr, his parents, and 3 loving sisters; Marie Garrett, Connie Driscoll, and Patricia Alexander. Fred leaves behind his wife of 57 years Josephine, daughter Jennifer, Son in Law Ben, and grandson Keegan. Also, many sister in laws, brother in laws, nieces, and nephews who will deeply miss him.
A memorial mass and celebration of his life will be held at Saint Edward the Confessor Church, New Fairfield on June 1st at 11:00. Donations in his memory can be made to Saint Jude’s Children Hospital; 262 Danny Thomas Place, Memphis, TN 38105 and Dream Come True; 178 Osborne Street, Danbury CT, 06810.
