Cynthia Ann (Oberlander) Almeida, 59, formerly of Danbury and Brookfield, Connecticut and Indian Trail, North Carolina, passed away on August 28, 2016. Born April 10, 1957, in Stamford, Connecticut, she was the daughter of Harrington Oberlander, II and the late Elizabeth Oberlander of Norwalk, Connecticut.
She graduated from Danbury High School and was a certified cosmetologist from Americo’s Academy of Beauty in Danbury. Cynthia owned her own business, An Inspiration Hair Salon, in Brookfield and Bethel for many years.
Survivors include a daughter, Courtney Almeida of Middletown; a son, Eric Almeida of Danbury; one grandson, Justin Almeida; two brothers, Harrington Oberlander, III, of Asheboro, North Carolina, and Jeffrey Oberlander of Roswell, Georgia; a sister, Roxanne (Christopher) Ferguson of Marietta, Georgia; and many nieces, nephews, and close friends. She was predeceased by her sister, Kimberly Oberlander and brother, Brian Oberlander.
She and her admittedly favorite child, Eric, had a strong bond. Each week they would heavily debate and dissect that week’s Survivor episode. Cynthia never understood why her daughter never shared their Survivor passion.
As the sole hair dresser to her daughter for over 30 years, Cynthia received immense joy informing her daughter of her first grey hairs. Since informing her daughter only once wasn’t enough, she was nice enough to remind her daughter during every visit that she was….aging…
Cynthia’s grandson Justin was her pride and joy. When her daughter and grandson would visit, Cynthia would watch cartoons with him and take him to the movies. Cynthia was not fond of the cartoons, nor her grandson’s selection of movies (only because none of them were directed by Clint Eastwood), but she watched them because she knew it would make him happy.
She was very fortunate to have had many lifelong friends. Her dear friend Karen, who she grew up with in Connecticut and who lived up the road from her in North Carolina, went above and beyond when Cynthia needed her the most. Karen was like a sister to Cynthia, and Cynthia was forever grateful to have Karen by her side.
A special thank you to her brother Harrington (Skipper) for always being there for her, especially during the past year. He ensured that she was being taken care of and helped with her laundry list of home repairs. She appreciated everything he did for her. He was definitely in the running as her favorite sibling.
Cynthia will be missed most for her dry sense of humor, her infectious laugh, and her ability to tell it how it is. Cynthia also had many catchphrases, such as “it’s not about you…” “interesting...” “isn’t that special...” and “boom!” Cynthia's friends and family would be hard-pressed to hear those phrases and not think of her. Sometimes (most times), those phrases would drive her loving daughter nuts, but they were part of what made Cynthia unique.
It was very easy to get Cynthia worked up. One mention of Trump, and you could watch her roll her beautiful blue eyes. It saddens her daughter that Cynthia will not be able to vote in this year’s presidential election. Cynthia was very much looking forward to not voting for Trump.
You will be forever remembered and missed, Mom.
