Yvonne was born and raised on the island of St. Croix, United States Virgin Islands. She is preceded in death by her parents Wilhelm Samuel and Luetta Carrington, and brother Corp. Clive L. Evans. Yvonne attended St. Joseph’s Catholic school and then attended the University of the Virgin Islands (at the time referred to as CVI) where she earned her degree in Elementary Education.
Yvonne has been an elementary school teacher her entire professional life. She started teaching at Lew Muckle Elementary school on St. Croix and transitioned to Charles A. Gill Elementary school in Dallas after her family relocated to Texas.
Yvonne is survived by her husband Egbert Hood, sons Albert, Yves, Egbert II (Chip) and daughter Tisha-Vonique. Additionally, she is survived by grandchildren Chelsea Maxwell and Solana, Carrington and Ysephony Hood along with great-grandchildren Amari & Addisyn Maxwell. She is also survived by her three sisters LaVerne (Jackie) Duncan, Barbara Carrington and Verdell Burnett, half-sister Mariel Samuel, half-brother Wilhelm Samuel, Jr. and four nephews, one niece and numerous other relatives.
An accomplished singer early in life, Yvonne was a lead singer and songwriter in the Caribbean vocal group Jeanette and The Jays. Yvonne was also a talented softball player who could hook a fierce curveball for her high school team. Her love of teaching continued beyond the classroom as a sponsor of multiple afterschool programs, most notably Global Elementary Model United Nations. Later, she received Teacher of the Year and Who's Who Among America's Teachers accolades. She further demonstrated her selflessness by uplifting her children's scholastic community as a member of various school leadership teams, Parent Teacher Associations and high school Band Boosters.
Yvonne will be remembered as a dedicated wife and loving mother and grandmother who thrived in being surrounded by her family. She also was a committed teacher with a lifelong passion for education who loved and cherished all her students. Expressions of love were always displayed throughout her life by everyone who was fortunate to know her.
A Gathering of Remembrance will be held on Sunday, October 10, 2021 at the Sparkman/Hillcrest Funeral Home from 2-4pm at 7405 West Northwest Highway, Dallas Tx 75225. In lieu of flowers, please consider honoring Yvonne by donating on her behalf to the St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital or the American Diabetes Association. A formal funeral and burial will be held in the coming weeks at her place of birth, Christiansted, St. Croix USVI.
