Tom G Calhoun II

Thomas Gilmer Calhoun II was born June 12, 1927, in Tenaha, Texas, an only child of Corinne and John Calhoun. He graduated from Tenaha High School, and then joined the Army to serve in WWII. After leaving the army he graduated in 1950 with a degree in Petroleum Engineering from Texas A&M University, where he was a distinguished student and member of the Student Senate. Upon graduation he joined Stanolind Oil and Gas Company. In 1951 Tom married his wife of 63 years, Nancy Baker Calhoun, while in West Texas. Tom next worked for Sun Oil Company, and after transferring to Dallas in 1955, he joined DeGoyler MacNaughton. Tom started Calhoun Engineering in 1965, followed with the formation of Petroleum Tracers in 1967. Petroleum Tracers offered a unique capability to inject radioactive isotopes in order to label injected oil and gas, using tools of his own design. He formed Calico Investments in 1970, and Calico Operating in 1988. Tom loved his chosen profession, especially his particular expertise in reservoir engineering and property evaluation. His work took him to North and South America, Europe, Asia, and the Middle East.

Tom was elected a distinguished member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers, Chairman of the Dallas chapter, as well as the Northwest Texas division of the SPE, a member of the Society of Petroleum Evaluation Engineers, the Society of Independent Professional Earth Scientists, a member of the Dallas Petroleum Club and active in the Independent Petroleum Association of America. He served as an expert witness in four states and the District of Colombia and traveled as a Distinguished Lecturer in Venezuela, Argentina, Bolivia, and Trinidad.

Tom was devoted to his work, family, friends, and faith. He enjoyed fishing at Woodvale Fishing Club and Fin and Feather Club of Dallas, was an avid reader and amateur Civil War historian and a member of Believer’s Chapel of Dallas.

He is survived by his wife Nancy, daughters Katy Calhoun Pasqual, Mary Jane Calhoun Jones and husband Ralph, grandchildren Emily Pasqual, Phillip Pasqual, Kelly and Daniel Simmons, and Will Jones.

We are deeply appreciative of the help and support of Luz Espindola, Stephanie Bickham, Shirley Merrill, Lelia Suarez, and Brenda Dunnigan, who treated Tom, and indeed all of his family, with great kindness. We could not have asked for better or more caring support.

Tom ended his life as he lived it, characterized by kindness, generosity, and faithfulness. Memorial Services will be held at Sparkman Hillcrest, 7405 W. Northwest Highway, Monday, June 22, at 11:00 a.m.
