What can be said about Thomas L Anderson, Jr. (Tom or Tommy to his friends and family?)
A 25-year plus veteran award winning newspaperman (with stints at the Waco- Tribune-Herald, Hillsboro Daily Mirror and Fort Worth Star Telegram covering politics, major events, police and fire across the state and occasionally national. Tom aspired to be a journalist since his high school days based in part of his being nearby for both the 1963 Kennedy Assassination, of which he took a color photo, and the 1964 Dallas Beatles Concert.
Tom graduated from Dallas Thomas Jefferson High School in 1965 where he remained committed Alumni. He graduated from East Texas State University in 1969. One of his most special moments was when he completed his Masters of Liberal Arts Degree in December 1996 with Texas Christian University in the same ceremony where his son Trey earned his bachelor’s degree.
Tom’s newspaper career spawned his college years at Tyler Junior College and East Texas State University in the mid-1960s to the mid-eighties. In this timespan he was recognized with numerous awards including a prestigious Headliners Award for coverage of an explosion at an ammunition factory.
He was considered by those who knew him as a man of many words which he shared in stories to convey his unique life experiences and connect with people. This was one of his greatest joys. He never met a stranger.
Tom was also known for his many acts of civic service in his community ranging from being a volunteer fire fighter, Boy Scout Volunteer, Citizen on Patrol, Skywarn, American Radio Relay League and a member of the Colleyville Fire Department Rehab team. One of his efforts was organizing and institutionalizing the Eagle of Review process for the Lakeview District of the Longhorn Council BSA.
Tom and his wife Cheryl are active members of William C. Martin United Methodist Church in Bedford, Texas. Tom served the church at times in various committees.
Tom was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and son. He is preceded in death by father Thomas L Anderson Sr.
He is survived by his wife Cheryl of 43 years, his two sons Trey and John and their spouses Nicole and Amber as well as 6 grandchildren (Paul, Emily, Ryan, Mya, Damian, and Alex), his brother Charles, mother Dorothy and his beloved pets Pancho and Rosy.
Funeral services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Monday (Visitation at Noon) at William C. Martin United Methodist Church. A private burial service will be held at Sparkman/Hillcrest Funeral Home & Cemetery in Dallas.
