Sue Gilmore, beloved wife of the late E.M (Morriss) Gilmore, Jr., mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and friend of many, died peacefully and a believer in Jesus Christ on May 24, 2024, at age 92 surrounded by family.
Sue and Morriss made their life together in San Antonio for 60 years, moving to Dallas in 2012 to be near their children and their families. She was born, Sue Frenzel, a child of God, in Galveston, Texas on September 1, 1931. After her parents divorced in 1936, she went to live with a sister, Sybil Wendt, and her husband Woodrow, in various Texas towns, including Lockhart and Sonora. Sue changed her last name from Frenzel to Wendt in July 1948 after graduating from Sonora High School. She attended the University of Texas at Austin from 1948 to 1951. She lived in Littlefield Hall in the same room (232) as her sister Sybil 18 years earlier and daughter Carol 25 years later. All three were members of the Orange Jackets service organization. She later earned a bachelor’s degree from the University of Texas at San Antonio.
She married the love of her life on June 14, 1952, in Galveston, Texas at Trinity Episcopal Church. Sue was a devout Episcopalian her entire adult life and was a devoted student of Christian teachings, a long-time member of Bible Study Fellowship (BSF), and an avid reader of religious books. Sue cherished the free gift of redemption, more than anything else.
After Sue and Morriss married, they moved to San Antonio, where Morriss was a successful small businessman. Sue was interested in most everything, and she was a wonderful conversationalist. She was a voracious reader, especially of George Washington, with many books on him in her library. She loved Fox News and remained a fan of Donald Trump to the end. She loved to cook and entertain, and the Gilmores were active socially and enjoyed many friendships, most notably as members of the Cosmos, a San Antonio social club. They were long-time members of and active in St. George Episcopal Church in San Antonio.
Sue and Morriss were very loving and active in their children’s lives and, in particular, spent many weekends over many years at their treasured Lake LBJ lakehouse. There, they taught many of their children’s friends to water ski, but none as proficient as daughter Carol and son Gary.
In Sue’s words, she lived a good life, and lived it to the fullest. She loved to travel, and she and Morriss made ten trips to Europe after their children were grown. She loved to help people, and her personal papers contain many letters from grateful friends for the kindness, care, and compassion that she had shown. Sue was a beautiful lady, inside and out, and an early advocate of Beauty For All Seasons. She took great joy in helping and showing people the way to dress and choose colors that fit them best.
Sue loved music. She enjoyed the pop music of the 1960’s and 1970’s with her children growing up. She enjoyed Christian music, and especially music from Broadway Musicals. In contemplating death, she whimsically said, “ ‘don’t cry for me, Argentina!’ I will be very happy!” She was prepared for death and wanted to go to Heaven and meet Jesus and her loved ones.
Sue was the seventh child born to Louis Frederich Frenzel (died 1962) and Stella Lee Carpenter Frenzel (died 1971). Her siblings Ruby Frenzel Tolbert; Sybil Frenzel Wendt; Louis Frenzel; Estelle Frenzel Alexander; Steven Frenzel; and Joan Frenzel Cusenbary (twin) preceded her in death. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Morriss, and is survived by her children, Carol Gilmore Kelly (Gary) and Gary Gilmore (Debbie); her grandchildren, Caroline Kelly Pfeiffer (Mark), Lizzy Kelly Johnson (Derek), Mason Gilmore (Sophie), and Lauren Gilmore Woodley (Mason); her great-grandchildren, Emily Pfeiffer, Hadley Johnson, Harper Johnson, Ali Pfeiffer, Gray Gilmore, Mary Grace Woodley, Charlie Gilmore, Will Woodley, and George Woodley. Her family was her priority. She was very proud to be Momu and adored her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.
