Steve was deeply loved and will be profoundly missed. He was a man of many passions, including his wife, the great outdoors, hunting with friends, golf, fine food and wine, and sharing meaningful moments with the people he cared about most.
Steve was born on March 12, 1949, in Charlotte, North Carolina. At the age of 2 weeks he joined the family of Betty and Lloyd Brown, who cherished him as their own.
Steve’s early achievements included earning the rank of Eagle Scout, reflecting his strong character and perseverance. He graduated from the University of South Carolina – Columbia, where he was a proud member of Kappa Alpha Fraternity. During his time with the fraternity, Steve served as Social Chairman before being elected president, known as “Number One.”
Steve began his professional journey in banking in Greenville, SC, before joining IBM in 1976, where he excelled in his role. Most importantly, it was during his time at IBM that he met the love of his life, Ann. Together, they built a life full of love and partnership.
In 1982, Steve transitioned to a career in commercial real estate, where he thrived. He joined James E. Sowell Co. in 1992, enjoying a fulfilling and successful 32-year career.
Steve was also a passionate golfer, spending much of his time as a member of Preston Trail Golf Club and The Vintage Club in Indian Wells, CA. His love of the outdoors extended beyond golf—Steve was a lifetime member of Ducks Unlimited, a reflection of his deep respect for wildlife and conservation.
Steve is survived by his wife Ann, his sister Beth McSwain and his niece Ashley Fulcher (John).
