Scott Liggett Oaks was born to Mr. and Mrs. J.D. Oaks, July 22, 1966 at Spohn Hospital in Corpus Christi. At a young age Scott learned to play the drums and displayed an exceptional talent for music. Soon after mastering the drums, his older brother Brett introduced him to "guitars" which sparked a passion that he carried until his last day. Out of this passion he met "Kimmie Gay", his guitar and love of 40 years. Scott or Scotty SLO Guitar, as he was known in the music world, was a talented guitar player who played from his heart and transported the audience to a world of the likes of Stevie Ray Vaughan, Eddie Van Halen, and Randy Rhoads.
While Scotty's music left its impression on all of us, it was his loyalty to friends and family that marked their hearts. His always calm and soothing way made him the perfect companion and gained him many friends. Scott loved his family and he took pleasure in playfully stealing the "blankies" (blankets) from Saylor and Charly - his two little grandnieces. He was the proud uncle of Anna, their mother, and was thrilled to know that his nephew Ben was also interested in music and guitars. He enjoyed hanging out with Brett on Sundays and never missed a family dinner. He was his sister-in-law Tere's favorite guest for family dinners. Most importantly he loved his mother and more recently became the loyal care giver of this father. His friends found him to be one of the most authentic and genuine people they ever met and went out of his way to stay in touch and reconnect with each one of them. Mark, Steve, Mike, Aaron and Casey were his "brothers in guitar" and their "brotherhood" is what stories are written about.
Besides playing the electric guitar, Scotty also played classic guitar and was well versed in music theory. He was well known in the music scene in north Texas where he played with his friends and where he surely will be missed.
Scotty was an icon of the box office for more than twenty years where he met many people and awesome musicians. After Kimmie Gay his most valuable possession was his collection of concert ticket stubs. He will rest in peace next to his beloved mother Dixie and not far from Stevie Ray Vaughan's final resting place. Jam on until we see you again!
