Payton, Robert Lee Jr., of DeSoto, Texas passed peacefully surrounded by family on April 2, 2016. Born in Livingston, Texas on September 9, 1941, Robert was the third of four children parented by Robert Lee, Sr. and Margaret Payton. As a child in a small community, along with siblings John Earl, Margaret Ann, and Carolyn Jean, Robert enjoyed life’s simple pleasures including fishing, golfing and educational activities. As a high school student, Robert excelled in both his educational as well his extracurricular endeavors. With an interest in the sciences and a standout football and track star at Dunbar High School, Robert earned a scholarship to Prairie View A&M University. It was while at Prairie View University that Robert’s life would be forever altered. In 1962, Robert met classmate Beverly Joyce Monroe of Beaumont who pursuing a degree in nursing. Instantly smitten, Robert would often try to impress Beverly by singing, performing standing backflips, and other feats to win her affection. But, it was their bond on a spiritual level that solidified a mutual respect and adoration. They were married six months later... After earning his Bachelor’s degree in Science in 1963, Robert began teaching in Corrigan, Texas while Beverly was completing her degree. He would travel daily to his new teaching jobs at Corrigan High School for a half-day and return to Livingston High for the other half. After Beverly earned her degree, the couple relocated to Dallas, Texas. There, Robert landed his first job with the Dallas Independent School District as a teacher and coach at James Madison High School in 1965. Robert furthered his education by completing a Master degree in Education from Southern Methodist University in 1973, and Superintendent certification at Texas Women University several years later while continuing to provide for his growing family. Robert spent his life dedicated to a career in education and public service holding several principal assignments including O. M. Roberts Elementary, T. C. March Middle, Spruce High, Kimball High, and Skyline High. Robert garnered respect from his peers by implementing his personal educational philosophy: Children come to us with a variety of experiences and diverse backgrounds. As educational leaders, we must find ways to build upon these experiences and provide the tools that will enable them to become productive citizens in our society. After several positions on district campuses, Robert would eventually join the Administration ultimately landing the role of Interim General Superintendent in July 2000. Robert retired from the District in 2002. A dedicated husband, father, brother, and educator, Robert lived as he spoke: Christ first. Robert is survived by his wife of 53 years, Beverly, daughter Pamela, son Tara, brother, John, and a host of other family, peers and former students poised to be productive citizens in our society. Mission accomplished, Robert. Well done.
