Robert Edwin Davis, Sr., a Dallas attorney for 63 years, died on April 29, 2022 ,at the age of 87. Known as "Bob Davis" by many friends, he was born in New Orleans, Louisiana, but resided in Dallas for the last 71 years of his life. His parents were Roderick B. Davis and Rebecca Webb Davis. Bob had four siblings, Joseph B. Rodriguez, Stephen G. Davis, Don Edward Davis and Dolores Ann Davis.
While attending Adamson High School in Dallas, Bob was involved in public speaking and debate for four years under the tutelage of Carl Nutley, the debate coach, and that experience altered the course of his professional life. He graduated from Southern Methodist University with a B.A. in 1957 and a J.D. from SMU's Law School in 1958. When a freshman at the law school, he and two teammates won the Texas Moot Court Competition against the challenge of all the other law schools in Texas. He was a member of the editorial staff for the Oil & Gas Reporter for two years. Upon graduation from law school, Bob was awarded a graduate fellowship by the Southwestern Legal Foundation and taught oral advocacy at SMU's law school during the 1958 -1959 academic year, and he also studied graduate courses in federal tax law.
Bob was blessed to have four sons with first wife, Sandra L. Davis: Robert E. Davis, Jr., Alan R. Davis, Christopher L. Davis and Ian E. Davis. All four of Bob's and Sandra's sons have been successful adults and from those four very capable sons and their lovely wives, Bob has had six grandchildren, of whom the entire family was very proud. Bob then married Trina Lowery in 1989, and during that marriage Bob and Trina had three wonderful daughters: Skye Violet Davis, Shea Lona Davis and Arran Ansley Davis. Shea and Arran are twins. Bob now has seven children, all of whom are a source of joy to Bob and others in the family. All of Bob's children and grandchildren reside in the Dallas area.
During his lengthy professional life, Bob was widely known as a trial lawyer. His early career was focused on the trial and appeal of federal tax cases across the United States. Bob's career broadened over the years. Among those he represented with distinction and honor were one of the most recognized artists in country music, The State Bar of Texas as authorized by the Texas Supreme Court, a known target of the Whitewater investigation, the nation’s largest telecommunications company in class action litigation in both federal and state proceedings in Texas, Oklahoma and Arkansas for 19 years, and numerous lawyers, accountants and accounting firms, to identify just a few.
Bob had the further distinction and honor to have served as the President of the Dallas Bar Association and as Deputy Assistant Attorney General of the United States of America Department of Justice, Tax Division.
Bob is survived by each of his children noted above; his grandchildren, Rachel, Audrey, Jackson, Ava, Julia and Anderson; brothers, Joseph B. Rodriguez and Don Edward Davis; nieces, nephews and countless friends and colleagues, both in and out of the legal profession, who loved him dearly.
In lieu of flowers, the family welcomes memorials to S.M.U. Dedman School of Law scholarships, which may be sent to the SMU Office of Development, P.O. Box 750305, Dallas Texas, 75257-0305.
