Jurhee was born in Childress, Texas, to Alton and Lucille Sheffield on July 20, 1939. She graduated from Fresno High School in Fresno, CA and later attended Hardin Simmons University. After marrying James Morgan Philpot in 1961, she attended Golden Gate Baptist Seminary in San Francisco, CA.
She served as a Southern Baptist Missionary for the International Mission Board in both Mexico and Costa Rica from 1966 to 2001 as home support, church planner and language school coordinator. Upon her retirement and return to Dallas, she worked at the North Dallas YMCA in their guest services department from 2007 to 2018. She actively participated with the Esther Sunday School Class at Park Cities Baptist Church.
Jurhee is preceded in death by her son, Jamie Philpot, husband, James Philpot, parents, Alton and Lucille Sheffield, brother Alton “Shef” Sheffield, and sister Jean Adams.
Jurhee is survived by daughter Jodi Arguello and husband Javier Arguello, daughter Jennifer Philpot and partner Antony Siggers, daughter Jill Beavers and husband Curtis Beavers, brother Hugh Sheffield, grandchildren Natalie and Nik Pineider, Ian Arguello, Morgan and Austin Beavers, and Samuel, Thomas, Blaize, and Joshua Siggers.
Jurhee loved to entertain, was an avid cook and host. No one went home hungry or without attempting, and failing, to beat her at a game of cards. She was a consummate tour guide, showing family and friends the delights of Mexico and Costa Rica. Later in life, she became an avid traveler fulfilling her dream of visiting the world’s great cities. She made friends easily and kept in touch with many. She had an avid social media following for her humorous and, at times, incendiary posts. She lived passionately, laughed heartily and loved deeply. She leaves a gaping hole.
A memorial service and celebration of life will be held at 10:00 AM Friday, June 11, 2021, at Sparkman/Hillcrest Funeral Home. Burial will follow at a later date at Cherry Hill Cemetery in Cherry Hill, Arkansas.
