Our beloved mother, Mary Barker Marquez, age 95, passed away on December 29, 2018, in Dallas, Texas. Mary was born, along with her twin sister Martha, in San Antonio, Texas on July 11, 1923 and was one of nine children to Carter and Carmen Barker.
Mary spent her youth between San Antonio and Mexico City due to her father’s work travel in the mining industry. After marrying her husband, Julio Marquez, and settling in Mexico City, she had her three children, Letticia Zucha who is married to Patrick, Richard Marquez who is married to Denise, and Yolanda “Marcela” McCormick who is married to Jim. Mary remained in Mexico City until the death of her husband in 1963, after which she returned to San Antonio with her children.
Mary devoted her life to raising and providing for her children, working for over 20 years for the San Antonio Catholic Diocese. After her retirement she moved to Dallas to be closer to her growing family. The matriarch of her family, she was a proud and doting grandmother to seven and great-grandmother (lovingly known as “Gigi”) to eight.
In addition to spending time with her family, Mary was an integral member of the Carrollton Senior Center. She enjoyed spending time with her siblings and friends playing card games.
Mary was preceded in death by her mother and father, husband, and siblings Helen Garcia, Gus Meade, Antonio Meade, Daniel Meade, twin Martha Marks, Charles Meade and Yolanda Barker.
Mary leaves behind her children and sister Alice Leitza, all of whom she cherished and spoke to daily. She also leaves behind grandchildren Lauren Loupot and husband Jason, Korena Garcia and husband James, Annalisa McKinney and husband Matt, Adrianne Marquez and fiancé Michael Dunham, Jordan McCormick and wife Mellina, Paul Marquez and wife Christina, and Christina Pollard and husband Brandon. She adored her great-grandchildren Parker, Juliana, Charlee, Lauren Catherine, Blakely, Isabelle, Carmen and Haddie. Her extended family include the daughters of Denise Marquez, Bethany Budz and Jordan Crase, and numerous loving relatives.
Mary was a beloved grandmother figure to many. She was respected for her strength and independence and lived a life of dignity and love. Mary’s passing is a great loss to her family but all know that she will be forever be in their hearts.
Mary’s family appreciates your prayers, love and support. Sincere thanks is given to Patty Serrano for her loving care, and Dr. Burbano for his many years of service.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorials be given to Faith Presbyterian Hospice at https://www.faithpreshospice.org/donate/ in memory of Mary Marquez.
