From early childhood, Karl worked at the family meat market. He attended Loyola Academy, the University of Colorado and Northwestern University, where he graduated in 1959. After graduation, Karl started his career in sales with Appleton Electric and later worked for Thermador. In 1965, Karl became part of a new firm in Chicago founded by his college roommate, Pat Ryan. In 1967, he moved to Dallas to lead the introduction of Ryan programs to auto dealers in the southern US. A few years later, Karl joined World Service Life Insurance in Fort Worth.
In 1977, Karl formed the Singer Group in Dallas, which he led for many years before being acquired by Aon Corporation. Karl then served as CEO of the Ryan Group and later as vice chairman of Aon Specialty Group. He retired from Aon in 2001. Karl went on to form Position One Group, assisting first-time home buyers in their quest for homeownership.
Karl considered his marriage to Barbara Ross McLaughlin in 1988 as the most important event in his life. Through this relationship, he made a new connection with Jesus Christ and lived 33 years with a giving companion driven by her servant's heart. His passion for ministry and evangelism led him to serve as director of the Willow Creek Association for 17 years, chair Joel Gregory Ministries and consult for Compassion International. He has been a member of Watermark Community Church since 2001.
Karl is preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Nancy Loftus and her husband, Dr. Jim Loftus.
