Josef Caldwell

Josef Caldwell, descendant of a pioneer North Texas family, was born Dec. 23, 1932, to attorney Randolph and Winifred Davis Caldwell in Baylor’s Florence Nightingale Hospital, Dallas, and died of pneumonia April 24, 2018. Graduating from Garland High School, he earned a BA at the Univ. of Texas Austin and served in the US Army on the staff of the Judge Advocate General stationed in Germany. He attended Perkins Theological Seminary, graduated with a M. Div. from Princeton Theological Seminary, was ordained and served as Associate Minister First Community Church UCC.

He graduated with a MSSW from UT Arlington Graduate School of Social Work and began a career in pastoral care and mental health. He was Exec. Dir. Suicide and Crisis Center Dallas, later Chairman of the Board. For many years he had a private practice in marriage and family counseling, later working as a hospital social worker and hospice chaplain. He has been associated with Pastoral Counseling Center of Dallas as adjunct faculty, graduate student supervisor and, most recently, a staff psychotherapist.

An avid golfer, he was a member of the Dallas Country Club, a former member of the Galveston Artillery Club, Idlewild and the Terpsichorean Club.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Louise Snow Phinney Caldwell, daughters Mattie Caldwell Roberts of Darien CT (Eric Whitney and Eric’s children Isobel Louise and George Nevins Whitney), Jane Barron Caldwell Jackson of Riverside CT (Alex), sons Josef Beau Caldwell and Charles Phinney Caldwell of Dallas, granddaughters Scarlett Phinney Jackson, Carolina DeWitt Jackson and Amelia Caldwell Jackson of Riverside CT, goddaughter Dr. Mary Kathryn Hyland Eagleton of Tyler, Texas, and neighborhood son, Thomas Lutrell Rose of Falls Church VA. We are all appreciative of Birdie Faye Hickman who has been part of our family for 51 years.

Honorary pallbearers will be Jack Rue Coleman, Dr. John W. Hyland, William R. Johnson, Dr. H. Leslie Moore, Edward Seay Oglesby, B. Dan Summers, Rex H. White, Jr.

Services will be at 3PM Saturday, April 28, 2018, at St. Michael and All Angels Chapel, 8011 Douglas Ave. The family will receive visitors Friday, April 27, from 4-6PM at Sparkman Hillcrest.
