John Anderson Stoneham

John Anderson Stoneham II, 78, of Highland Park, Texas, passed away on April 14, 2022, surrounded by family and friends. Born on June 23, 1943 to Elizabeth Slowe Stoneham and Jack Johnston Stoneham, John grew up in Dallas, TX. For his high school education, he attended the Choate School, a boarding school in Wallingford, Connecticut. He went on to graduate from Emory University with a degree in history in 1965, after which he spent a summer in London, England, serving at the American Embassy. Following his summer abroad, John moved to Dallas to attend business school at Southern Methodist University, graduating in 1967.

He began his career at Great Commonwealth Dallas, an insurance company, as a portfolio manager. In 1970, his father recruited him into the family cotton business, where he served as Treasurer until 1976. During this time, he diversified the business holdings into real estate and then served as the President of the Cotton Exchange from 1979 to 1980. Afterwards, he managed the family investment portfolio and was a real estate investor in Dallas.

At the age of 10, John traveled around the world with his parents. The sights and sounds of London, Paris, and Tokyo sparked his lifelong love of history and travel. He maintained a passion for reading and learning about different cities and cultures. He delighted in researching his family’s genealogy, which culminated in the publishing of his book, Diaries and Letters of Horace Aurelius Smith. A game enthusiast, he loved spending an evening with family and friends playing Gin Rummy, Dominoes, or Scrabble. He enjoyed life to the fullest with good food, cocktail hours with friends, and summers spent with family outside of Boulder, Colorado. He enjoyed memberships in various social organizations, most notably Brook Hollow Golf Club, the Idlewild Club, the Coon Creek Club in Athens, Texas, and the Lansdowne Club in London. He was a life-long member of St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church. A faithful husband, father, grandfather, and friend, he will be warmly remembered for his boisterous spirit, intelligence, generosity, and wit.

He is survived by his wife, Harriet Higginbotham Stoneham; son, John Davitt Stoneham, his wife, Katie, and their children, Connor, Blair, and Sadie; son, Joseph Harrison Stoneham, his wife Amy, and their children, Mark, Matt, and Allie; daughter, Mary (Bess) Stoneham Callarman, her husband Paul, and their children Jack and Kate. He is also survived by numerous nieces, nephews, and brothers- and sisters-in-law, all of whom he loved dearly.

In Lieu of Flowers, donations can be made in John's honor to the Outreach Program at St. Michaels and All Angels Church. A memorial service will be held at St. Michaels and All Angels Church on April 22nd at 11:00 am.
