Rev. Dr. John M. McCoy Jr. died on August 30, 2015. He was born in Dallas November 21, 1937 and remained a vibrant member and leader of the Dallas community. He attended the Highland Park Schools and graduated from Hillcrest High School. He we went on to receive a degree from the University of Texas in Austin and continued his education with a Masters of Divinity from Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary. He later received his PhD from Princeton Theological Seminary.
As a young minister, John served as the youth minister at Highland Park Presbyterian church and his parishes included congregations in Port Arthur Texas, and Morganton North Carolina. Later, he was the senior minister at St. Andrew Presbyterian Church in Denton, Texas and North Park Presbyterian Church in Dallas. After retirement, Dr. McCoy became the interim minister for Highland Park Presbyterian Church. He continued his ministry through teaching and Bible studies at congregations throughout Dallas and Fort Worth.
Dr. McCoy served his church community by participating on boards and committees for Grace Presbytery, The Presbyterian General Assembly, Presbyterian School of Christian Education, Schreiner College, Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary, Texas Presbyterian Foundation, and Dallas Pastoral Counseling and Education Center.
In addition to his dedication to the Christian ministry, John is well known for his love of theatre. When not behind the pulpit, you could find him as the lead of many local productions including Tevya in “Fiddler on the Roof”, Fagin in “Oliver”, Doolittle in “My Fair Lady”, Shamus in “The Unsinkable Molly Brown”, Henry Drummond in “Inherit the Wind”, Mr. Zeuss in “J.B”, King Arthur in “Camelot”, Captain Von Trapp in “The Sound of Music” and Horace Vandergelder in “Hello Dolly”. John would also perform at special events throughout the community. Irish jokes and songs kept his devoted audiences entertained.
Dr. McCoy also served on the board of the Garland Summer Musicals and the Board of Directors for the Dallas Summer Musicals. In 2015, he wrote the musical that was performed for the 75th Anniversary Gala.
John is survived by beloved wife of 55 years, Sue Becker McCoy, son John William McCoy and his wife Stacy of Fort Worth, daughter Laura McCoy Roberts and her husband Billy of Dallas, daughter Paige McCoy Smith and her husband Shay of Fort Worth, grandchildren Jessica and Mindy McCoy; William and West Roberts; Colton, Luke and Victoria Smith.
Services will be held at 2:00 pm, Thursday, September 3rd at Preston Hollow Presbyterian Church.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in Dr. John McCoy’s name to the John and Sue McCoy House at Austin Presbyterian Theological Seminary, 100 East 27th Street, Austin, Texas 78705-5797.
Dedicated husband, father, grandfather, pastor and friend, Dr. McCoy leaves behind a devoted family and legions of individuals who have been touched by his profound teachings, pastoral care, and love for his Creator.
