John Edward Mazon, Sr.

Philippians 1:21 says, “… to live is Christ and to die is gain.” John Edward Mazon, Sr. was a man who passionately lived for Christ and on February 16, 2023, entered a wonderful ‘gain’ by meeting his Lord, Savior and friend, Jesus.

John was married for 57 years to Helma Lee Hudson Mazon who also welcomed him into heaven alongside many family and friends. He leaves a legacy of three children: Lisa Hultz with spouse Rick; Shelley Liegl with spouse John; and John Mazon, Jr. with spouse, Becky; along with four grandchildren; Maddie Grace, Annie Beth, John Edward, III (Trace) and Kaler Jacob.

John was born and raised in Man, West Virginia, on August 27, 1941, to Irene and John Paul Mazon. John Paul was a coal miner and filling station owner in Man. Irene was a stay-at-home mom to John and his sister, Olga. As a young man, he enjoyed hunting and fishing with his father and worked at their filling station as well. In high school, he was a fullback in football (#31) and a first baseman in baseball (#18) for Man High School. John graduated from Man in 1959.

John attended Marshall University, in Huntington, West Virginia, where he received a Bachelor’s Degree in Science as a Biology major. John was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon fraternity and ROTC. While at Marshall, he met Helma and the two were married on May 30, 1964. After college, John entered The United States Army as an officer where he trained pilots at Fort Rucker, Alabama.

In 1967, John and Helma moved to Irving as John took a job with Braniff Airlines as a commercial airline pilot. In 1976, John and Helma began Mazon Associates, Inc., an accounts receivable financing company out of their home, while John continued to fly for Braniff. John also worked part-time for a fence company, sold real estate and also worked on the family’s rental properties. In 1982, John and Helma began working together to further grow Mazon Associates, Inc. from a small start-up to an industry leading company. Along with Mazon Associates, John began Mazon Building Maintenance, a company that provided janitorial services to banks and credit unions with his partner, Bill Bailey.

As a husband, John deeply loved Helma and they enjoyed a wonderful marriage together. John gladly spent extra time at home raising their kids while Helma used her gifts to lead the family business. As a husband and father he loved to cook meals, take care of the bills, to-do lists, projects and, of course, plan vacations. His love for Helma was demonstrated when she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2006. He lovingly, sacrificially and tirelessly cared for her throughout her treatment and recovery.

Together they served in the community, traveled the world and enjoyed countless holidays and parties with their family and friends. As a father, he was fiercely dedicated to his kids and sacrificially gave of himself throughout his life. As a grandfather, Paw Paw loved to spoil his grandkids, attend their events and competitions and simply enjoy time with them.

In the community, John was a member of The Kiwanis Club, The Rotary Club, a Board Member for The Dallas Life Foundation, the Irving Healthcare Foundation and Bible Study Fellowship. He was also a member and Deacon at Plymouth Park Baptist Church for over 40 years where he gave of himself by teaching Sunday School, singing in the choir, taking youth choir mission trips, participating in pageants and cantatas and supporting other ministries when needed. John also loved to hunt, fish, snow ski, play bridge and travel with family and friends.

John was affectionately known by many names; Dad, Coach, Captain, SD, Papa Juan, Pops and mostly as Paw Paw. He was beloved by many for his generous spirit and unconditional love. He lovingly mentored, supported and helped countless individuals, seminary students, missionaries and organizations throughout his life. His unique, generous way will be his lasting imprint on all our lives. He will be deeply missed but his legacy and impact will never be forgotten.

A viewing for John will be held Friday, March 3, 2023, at 2:00 PM, with a graveside service to follow at Sparkman-Hillcrest Funeral Home, 7405 West Northwest Highway, Dallas, TX, 75225.

A Celebration of Life will occur Saturday, March 4, 2023, 10:00 AM at Plymouth Park Baptist Church, 1714 N. Story Road, Irving, TX, 75061.
