Jay helped tremendously in my career. He offered me the first professional job in my career. He was a role model and a mentor. As a boss, he is patient, kind, and full of grace. He helped me to grow as a professional. I owe a lot to him. Pray that he is now resting in peace. Pray also for healing of Jay’s family.  - Cathy

I am so saddened to hear of Jay’s death. Unfortunately, we have been mostly out of touch since my family moved back to the Chi area from Dallas over 25yrs ago . We were fraternity brothers at Uof I , roommates after college, and hung out a lot in the early/mid 80’s in Dallas playing softball and golf. Jay was one of the funniest, sarcastic, quick witted people I have ever known.  We would catch up on the phone over the past few years and said we would get together.   Jay was a great and special person and I regret not getting together with him before it was too late .

To Jay’s family. Cliff & I knew Jay from the school yard which was our weekend dog park. For the last six years our two dogs, along with my husband, spent 2-3 hours each Saturday and Sunday mornings talking about sports, politics, anything newsworthy, and of course about dogs. We got to know Hero along with occasional visits from Jay’s grand dogs, Beans and Jinxs. Our prayers and love go out to Suzanne, his daughters, all family and friends. Because of our love for dogs and our connection with Jay because of our dogs, we have made a donation to the Dallas Dog Rescue Rehab Reform.

Jay was a dear friend throughout HS and college. We lost contact after college, though he always maintained my sincere affection, friendship and many fond memories. Our HS had about ~ 500 people in our class (‘75) and everyone, and I mean everyone, who knew Jay absolutely loved him!

Jay had an amazingly quick wit, kind heart and he will be missed. Sincere condolences to his loving family and his many friends and colleagues. God Bless and rest in peace Jay 🙏 ☀️ 💐

The loss of Jay Hoffman is beyond sad and surprising. His professional skills were matched with his friendly and humorous nature to all. I will miss him a great deal.

I was so sorry to hear of J's passing.  I worked for him at EFO for 9 years.  He reviewed the tax returns that I prepared.  I learned so much valuable information from him that it cannot be measured.
He will be missed.  My prayers are for his family and friends.

I will miss his goofy sense of humor, political banter, and endless rabbit trail stories.  But most of all, I will miss my friend, one of the few people that I could always count on being present, willing and able to help tackle any issue or circumstance despite his own daunting schedule.  His incredible brilliance made him a most treasured advisor but more importantly, he was a trusted friend.  

I think of the well-known verses from Psalm 23 that begin: "The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures.  He leads me beside still waters.  He restores my soul. . . "  I know he is at peace and at rest now.  But I will always feel his absence    here on earth.  

Dear Suzanne, Elizabeth and Kristen-
We were deeply saddened to hear of Jay's passing. Our prayers are for your comfort and peace during this time.
Jay had a caring, warm heart , expressed his joy and love for his family, and had a wonderful sense of humor - all qualities I'm sure will be passed to our shared grandchildren.

          The Hoffman family has blessed our own since our collective children entered preschool, and Jay helped our professional practice comply and prosper for several decades.   I can hear Jay’s laugh as I recall fun days, comedy theater, and last minute tax advice on many occasions. 

      This trio of sisters, Ramona, Susan and Linda and our families extend our deepest love and sympathy. Dear Suzanne, Kristen, and the Hoffman family, 

I write this with considerable admiration for your good and kind, respected family.   Hearing the news of Jay’s passing brings profound sadness to me; know your family is in my thoughts and prayers.  I officed next to Jay for a couple of years and grew to know him more than a talented CPA and tax preparer; he was a true gem in every sense.  His warmth, intelligence, and humor made him very likable.  He was a great storyteller in his personal life, and professionally, he could make complex business and tax concepts easily digestible.  Jay was a calm and knowledgeable presence.  He loved a good debate, and a witty quip was always on the ready.

I remember how he always spoke of his wife with love and respect and smiled when her name came up.  He was over the moon that Kristen officed with him for a time; he was a doting parent who would gush about his Daughters with tremendous pride and joy.  His loyalty and persistent dedication to the Esping Family and his clients were impressive.  

I am deeply saddened to discover that Jay was struggling with something that couldn’t be seen.  The mind can be cunning, baffling, and powerful.  Let this remind us all to be more attentive to one another, offer a listening ear, and support those around us who may be silently battling their torment.

Jay was a good man.  I remember the laughter he brought, the wisdom he shared, and the kindness Jay showed everyone. 

To the Hoffman family, I extend my sincerest condolences and support during this difficult time.  May you find strength and solace in the memories of a remarkable man.

Hearing the news of Jay’s passing was a gut punch. Jay has handled our work for 30 years. Jay was both a friend and a trusted advisor. Jay was always devoted and committed to the service of his clients. His work to achieve the best outcome was never ending and I always had complete faith in Jay’s work. While Jay struggled with deadlines (as he could not allow himself to take any short cuts, everything had to be right) I always knew the work would get done. As a friend,  I loved Jay’s dry wit, his commentary on the inefficiencies of the IRS and we shared many political views. Jay will be missed and I am so sorry for the family’s loss.

In the words of Paul McCartney “You can judge a man’s true character by the way he treats his fellow animals” and Jay was no exception to this.  When I met Jay over 23 years ago, he would tell me daily about his precious Bichon named Macaroon and how much he and Suzanne loved that dog.  Many years after Macaroon had passed Jay came to me and told me he was ready for another dog.  I found him a dog named Hero, an abused stray with trust and emotional issues, and PTSD.  Jay talked with me every day ad infinitum about Hero.  How Hero ate, which chair Hero sat in, how he rested his chin, what color his ball was and which toy was his favorite, how he was the fastest dog at the dog park and how Hero didn’t like Jay when Jay was dressed for the office, but preferred Jay in jeans and a ballcap because Hero then knew he would be loaded into Jays car to go for a ride.  How Hero went up the stairs to his home office, how he would sneak up on Suzanne’s side of the bed, and how Hero played with his cousins Beans & Jack.  Man’s Best Friend is a thing and Jay & Hero were the best of friends.  To me, Jay was loyal and funny, he loved to talk and always told a good story, he was social and animated, and very generous and inclusive.  He spoke proudly about his wife, children & grandchildren and their accolades.  I have no doubt that Macaroon was there wagging and waiting for Jay to show him the way, just as Jay will be waiting for Hero one day.
