John Hays Haynes

John Hays Haynes passed away on Saturday, January 11, 2020. He was born on August 17, 1933, in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, to Marvin Floyd and Helen Hays Haynes. He grew up in Ada, Oklahoma. Following high school at the historic Webb School in Bell Buckle, Tennessee, he enrolled at the University of Oklahoma from which he graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Industrial Engineering. He was a member of Beta Theta Pi fraternity and Tau Beta Pi honorary engineering fraternity.

Following his graduation in 1955, he enlisted in the United States Navy where he served as an officer in Japan and at navy bases in the United States from 1956 to 1959. He then entered graduate school at Purdue University where he graduated with a Master of Science degree in Civil Engineering in 1961. He practiced engineering in Dallas for several years with Mason-Johnston and Associates before founding his own firm, John H. Haynes and Associates. He also served as an adjunct professor of Soil Mechanics at Southern Methodist University.

Following his retirement after 30 years at the head of his firm, and several years consulting, John enjoyed touring the United States and Europe in his 1939 model classic car with friends in similar cars until ill health forced him to give up his much-enjoyed hobby.

He is survived by his wife, Linda L. Haynes, granddaughter Katharine C. Solms and husband John S. Solms Jr. M.D. of Temple, TX, grandson Matthew J. Colwill of Austin, TX, and great-grandson John S. Solms III of Temple, TX. He is also survived by nieces Ellen E. Haynes and Caroline H. Lopez, both of Dallas, TX. He is predeceased by his parents, his brother Richard D. Haynes, and his daughter Marcia H. Colwill. He was a member of Highland Park United Methodist Church for 57 years.

A memorial service to celebrate John’s life will be held on Tuesday, January 21, 2020 at 3:00 PM in the Cox Chapel of Highland Park United Methodist Church, located at 3300 Mockingbird Ln., Dallas, TX, 75205, following a private burial at Hillcrest Memorial Park.
