Known to friends and family as “Jack”, John W. Davis was born to a pioneer Tennessee family which first came to America in 1619. Jack was born Sept. 7, 1927, to Elizabeth Osborne and John S. Davis, one of the founders of the Tennessee Walking Horse organization. Jack raised this breed as a youngster and continued his interest all his life. Following military service in World War II in Europe as a forward observer and then aide to Gen. Mark Clark, he returned to his home in Bell Buckle, Tennessee, and received a degree (Magna Cum Laude) at Carson-Newman College, Jefferson City TN. His life career with the YMCA took him to Chattanooga, Atlanta, Wilmington DL, Flint MI and then to Dallas in 1973. He was president and CEO of the Metropolitan YMCA of Dallas until 1987 when he was asked to form and serve as President of an insurance company for YMCA’s throughout the USA. He retired in 1993. He was a former president of the Urban Group of the YMCA, the Conference of Association Professionals, vice-president of the Assn. Of Professional Directors, member of Rotary for 25 years and a Rotary Paul Harris Fellow. He was a member of Brookhaven Country Club, enjoyed golf and the friends he met playing the game. His wife of 35 years is Rosemary Manns Davis of the Carrollton home. He is also survived by 5 children, Michael Davis of Denton, Mitchell Davis of Houston, Rickard Davis of Albuquerque NM, Christina Glosup of Dallas and Stephen Servies of Vail CO; 7 grandchildren, Carrissa, Colin, Clair and Kira Davis, Rosemary Lauren Magill, Clinton Marshall Glosup and Tina Milligan; 4 great-grandchildren, Devin Christine and Jaidlyn Magill, Marshall Elias Glosup and Madison Milligan. Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, February 4, 2012, at 2:00 pm at Church of the Holy Communion, 17405 Muirfield Dr., Dallas, TX 75287. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Dallas Metropolitan YMCA. “He was a man, take him for all in all, We shall not look on his like again.”
