Janet Carolyn Cox Harris, 82, passed away peacefully at home in the comfort of her loving family on March 14, 2023, after a short battle with leukemia. Janet was born on March 8, 1941, in Lubbock, Texas. She was the second child of Morris Sheppard and Mary Virginia Cox, growing up alongside her older brother, Don. After graduating from Highland Park High School in 1959, she went on to study Home Economics at North Texas State University (now UNT), graduating in 1963. Shortly after, she started her first job teaching Home Economics at RL Turner High School. Her career soon broadened as she went on to work for Dallas Power and Light, substitute teach in Dallas public schools, work a number of years at Baylor College of Dentistry, and finally, work in the Christian Education Department at Dallas Theological Seminary for more than 20 years, where she retired in 2019.
In 1960, Janet met the love of her life, Louis, on a blind date while sophomores attending North Texas State. Janet and Louis married the day after graduation on August 24, 1963. Several years later they welcomed their two children, Jennifer in 1971 and Lara in 1976. Janet found great joy in motherhood as it was a role she so desired and cherished.
Marveling at God’s creations, Janet loved life in every way. In addition to family, she enjoyed their many pets, spending time in the garden and nature, and spending time in fellowship with friends at First Baptist Church where she was a member for 76 years. She also had many lifelong friends from childhood, college, PTA, her Lakewood neighborhood, Camp Fire and likely at any local Target she frequented.
Janet is preceded in death by her husband Louis Harris, parents Morris and Virginia Cox, and sister-in-law Klina Cox.
She is survived by her daughters Jennifer (David) and Lara (Ben); her brother Don (Elaine); nephews Bret, Dane (grandnephew Taylor) and Ryan; her 19 grandchildren Gibson (Catie) and great grandsons William and Wesley; Anna (Garrett) and great grandson Schey; Maren; Brooke (Phillip) and great grandsons Harrison and Miles; Collin, Blake, Grace, Brayden, Anders, Ryan, Ella, Gabriella, Ian, Margaret, Nathaniel, Mary and Luke; as well as numerous beloved Cox cousins.
A private graveside will be at Grove Hill Funeral Home and the public memorial service will be held in Chafer Chapel at Dallas Theological Seminary on Saturday, April 29, 3pm, with a Fellowship Gathering immediately following at the family home in Lakewood, where, for 32 years, she lived “the best years of her life.”
