The first time I met Jane was in January of 2001, the night that Oklahoma won their 7th National Championship. My doorbell rang, and there was Jane standing with her dog, a huge smile on her face. She said, "Hi! My name is Jane and this is Lucas. I am your neighbor 2 doors down and I want to celebrate OU's win with someone that is a Sooner, too!" I invited her in and we stayed up for hours, talking, laughing, and getting to know each other. We discovered that not only did we share a love for OU, but we were also sisters of Chi Omega. If you knew Jane, you know OU and Chi Omega were very important to her. We became fast, dear friends. She came over to watch nearly every OU football game after that for many, many years.  And if we weren't watching it together, we would call each other during the game to discuss the plays. She knew more about football than anyone I know, and knew endless statistics that she could share.
There were so many other times, that we would spend together, usually outside in my backyard in the evenings. Jane was a wealth of knowledge and fascinating to talk with. There was a rare snow day when we lost power. We sat in front of my fire all day, laughing, talking, and playing games.
One of my favorite memories of an evening in my backyard, was when Jane came over to meet my parents, and at some point "whistling" was mentioned. As you know, Jane was a very talented whistler, and so was my dad. They began discussing music and operas, and then the most beautiful thing took place. Jane and my dad began whistling together. She'd say, "Hey Don, do you know this one?" and would begin whistling a song. He would smile in recognition and join in. You would have thought they had practiced together for years. 
We were neighbors for almost 2 decades, and I was devastated when she sold her house and moved. 
Jane was old school classy, absolutely lovely, endlessly kind, incredibly smart, and funny to a point of bellyache laughter with a twinkle in her eyes.

I wish I had spoken at Janie's service but did not, so I will now. To characterize of my sister Beth Henderson and Janie's long time friends Katherine and Suzanne, plus others, only as the ladies that cleaned out the apartment would be a mistake. They were so much more than that. They were Janie's family; her best friends, her chauffeurs, her caretakers, her confidants, her cheerleaders, her drinking buddies, her biggest fans. Janie and my sister Beth were sisters in the truest sense of the word. When Janie joined our extended family for a few days in Galveston several years ago, Janie stepped right up to be a part of the Branch Family Talent Show! She was one of the few that actually had talent that night-she could whistle like crazy, and did a medley of patriotic tunes since we were there over July 4th!  The next summer when the family went again to Galveston Janie was included and was the winner of the Texas Hold 'Em poker tournament! Janie was a character and a classic. I will miss her always.

03/26/2021: Janie and I met at Locke Liddell, a Dallas law firm, in 1995. I started there as a part-time paralegal.  From the first day we met, we were the best of friends. But, we could not have been more different!  Janie was a poised, beautiful, sophisticated, intelligent, witty Highland Park lady, and I was a smart, pregnant, funny, cute, athletic, Garland girl The more I got to know her, the more I wanted to be like her! I wanted to be well-read, have her quick-wit and intelligence, dress like her, have her style and grace (and shoes)!  Janie loved and accepted me, and I loved, accepted and respected her. We embraced our differences, and we shared many years of unconditional love and friendship. We made great memories. There are so many stories, so much laugher, so much fun, friendship and wine. Girls nights out, swimming parties, Christmas stories, and 2000 characters cannot describe our beautiful friendship.  Jane and Candee were the first friends to be by my side when my husband passed away from cancer.  Janie, with her perfect grammar and eloquence, helped me write Mark’s obituary. I wish she were with me now as I write this tribute. This tribute would have been marked-up in red ink by Janie, and, she would have given me a grammar refresher lesson.  The last few weeks, Candee and I have spent countless hours laughing and crying over Janie stories. My heart hurts, and I will miss her. I will miss her voice, laughter, quick-wit, hugs, intelligence, stories and encouragement. She made me a better person, and I’m so grateful for the gift of her friendship.  will miss you, Janie.

Janie was a joy and a true original!
I’ll always remember her lovely voice, rapier wit  and wicked sense of humor.
She was one of the Galveston girls... and it doesn’t get any better.

I first met Jane when she was hired as a proof-reader at the firm where I practiced law.  Because of her attention to detail and her obvious level of intellect, Jane was  promoted from proof-reader to paralegal in short order.  At that time, she was the only paralegal at the law firm and one of only a handful of designated paralegals in the Dallas area.  Jane worked with me and other attorneys in the firm.  Jane excelled at each of the tasks to which she was assigned. 

On a personal note, Jane was always kind and nice to to me and others.  The only time we "butted heads" was during the Texas-OU football weekend when Jane, as an OU alumnus, cheered for the Sooners and I,  as a Texas alumnus, cheered for the Longhorns.  

Over the years Jane attended several small parties at the home of me and my wife.  When playing "Trivial Pursuit" with Jane at one of these parties, I learned that she had a phenomenal knowledge of literature.  After a while of playing the game, it became obvious that Jane knew more about literature than anyone else with whom I was acquainted.

Jane was always a kind and selfless person.  She will be missed by many.  I know that I will miss her.



I will always remember Janie as a lovely person. She was always easy to talk to and had a great sense of humor. I last saw her in Galveston. She was always a beach lover so we shared dinner at the Galveston Country Club. She was just so happy and entertained us all at the table. I know she will be missed by so many.

I will always remember Janie with a smile on her face. And her authentic gratitude for family. Being with her at Christmas Day lunch was always a treat-she had an infectious laugh and wonderfully funny stories to share. I will miss her very much.
