James was born on June 29, 1923 on a farm near Helena, Oklahoma, a son of his father: Ernest Gilbert Thompson and his mother Vere McClure.
He married A. Frances Thompson in the early 1940s. His wife Frances Thompson preceded him in death in 2011.
James grew up in Helena, Oklahoma and went to school in a one room school house. He graduated from high school in Helena, Oklahoma.
After high school, he attended the University of Oklahoma in Norman, Oklahoma.
During his college career, he had enlisted in the Army Air Corp and was called.
After his service he went back to the University of Oklahoma and to complete his degree. He graduated with a bachelor's degree in geology.
After graduation, he worked for Sun Oil Company his entire career until his retirement in the late 1980s.
James was Methodist in faith. He greatly enjoyed genealogy.
When he was younger, he enjoyed hunting and fishing.
He loved history and to stop by every historical marker.
Over the years, Frances and James had a recreational vehicle and enjoyed countless trips together to different places.
James is survived by three children: Michael (wife Trish) Thompson of Phoenix, Arizona, Deborah Thompson of Allen, Texas, and Timothy Thompson of Dallas, Texas.
Five grandchildren: Jennifer (husband Ed) Mayhall of Allen, Texas, Jeffrey Clevenger of Garland, Texas, James Clevenger of Garland, Texas, Jordan Clevenger of Plano, Texas, and Eva Thompson of Chicago, Illinois.
Four great grandchildren: Christian Clevenger, James Clevenger, Alice Mayhall, and Stella Clevenger.
James is preceded in death by his parents and all of his siblings.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, August 2, 2019 at 10:00 AM at the Dallas Fort Worth National Cemetery, located at 2000 Mountain Creek Parkway, Dallas, Texas 75211. James will be laid to rest with his wife Frances.
