Jim was born January 3, 1931, in Hendricks, Minnesota to Raymond and Carrie (Kolstad) Halvorson.
After graduation from Humboldt Highschool, St. Paul, Minnesota in 1949, he enrolled at the University of Minnesota where he was a member of the Army ROTC. After graduation, he entered the Army and served overseas in Wertheim, Germany, as a First Lieutenant in artillery. Upon completion of his overseas assignment, he returned to St. Paul. He was introduced to Diane Marie Pape, who was attending a Dietitian Internship at the University of Minnesota. They were married on June 11,1960, in Diane’s hometown of Dubuque, Iowa. This past June they celebrated 60 years of marriage.
Jim’s work career was primarily in bank supervision. He enjoyed a long tenure with the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation “FDIC”, serving as Regional Director of the Madison, Wisconsin, Boston and Memphis Regions. After leaving the FDIC, he joined the Federal Home Loan Bank of Dallas, serving as Vice President and Supervisory Agent. Following Federal Regulatory reforms, he then served as Assistant Director of Operations for the Office of Thrift Supervision. After retirement, he acted as a Financial Consultant that included a World Bank sponsored assignment for the National Bank of Kazakhstan. He was also an expert witness for the Department of Justice. Jim had very special friendships with many of his colleagues and bankers. His job with the Federal Home Loan Bank brought him to Dallas, Texas where he lived the past 33 years.
Jim enjoyed retirement spending time with family and grandchildren. He was a loyal Vikings fan, and loved to travel back to Minnesota, especially Peterson, Minnesota to reunite with cousins at their ancestral homestead.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and brother Charles Halvorson.
He is survived by his wife, Diane Halvorson and two Daughters: Sue Holmes (husband Mike) of Edina, MN, and Heidi Parra (husband Alfonso) of Plano, TX. He was a wonderful grandfather to 8 grandchildren: Kathryn, Charles, Daniel, Michael, and Matthew Holmes; Lucas, Mario, and Sofia Parra.
A Funeral Mass for the family will be held at Christ the King Catholic Church in Dallas, Texas on September, 11th, and burial will follow at the Dallas Fort Worth National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Christ the King Catholic Church, 8017 Preston Road, Dallas, Texas 75225.
