Bennett, Herbert John. With a mixture of sadness and gratitude to God, the family of Herbert John Bennett announce his peaceful death at home on Wednesday Sept 30, 2015. He was born in Dallas Texas on January 13, 1923. In 1942, Herb volunteered for the Merchant Marines and served as a merchant seaman on ships carrying fuel for the war effort. In January 1946 he married Gertrude T. Smith of Brooklyn New York, who died in 2002. They raised 8 children in East Northport, Long Island, New York, moving to Texas in 1963 where he transferred to the Dallas VA Hospital as a stationary engineer. He was a faithful member of St. Pius X Catholic Church. He is survived by his brothers, Fred and Steve and his sister Virginia. He is also survived by eight children: Bernard, Cecelia, Mary, Paul, Theresa, Gerard, Andrew and Anna, his 12 grandchildren and 10great grandchildren. The family will receive friends on Monday evening from 6-8pm at Sparkman Crane Funeral Home. Scripture service will be at 7p.m. Mass of Christian burial will be Tuesday at 10:00 am at St. Pius X Catholic Church, 3030 Gus Thomasson, Dallas 75228. A lunch reception will follow in the parish hall. Interment will be at 1pm at Calvary Hill Cemetery, Dallas. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to some of his favorite charities: St. Pius X Food Bank, Msgr. KingOutreach Center of Denton, Catholic Charities of Dallas, and Community Hospice of Texas.
