Gustave ("Gus") Adolph Ryser, Jr. was born December 22, 1928. He grew up in Dallas, Texas, a place which he would call home his entire life. He went to Highland Park High School and graduated with a Bachelor's Degree in Economics from Southern Methodist University in December of 1953. While at SMU he met the love of his life Marilyn Louise Spell, born September 15, 1933, also a Dallas native and graduate of Hockaday and SMU. The two wed in February of 1954 and embarked upon their lifetime journey together filled with love, laughter, friendships and many happy memories. Gus worked at ITT Grinnell/Tyco as Head of Internal Sales, and Marilyn worked at Steak & Ale Corporation as an Operations Assistant. They raised two boys, Jay and Andy. Every year, the family took a trip to a national park or other historic U.S. location. Gus coached the boys' baseball and soccer teams, and Marilyn was involved in Garden Club and the boys' Parent Teacher Association. Family was of utmost importance. And of course, so were their dear friends.
Gus was a storyteller. He could make anyone laugh. In retirement, he worked as a sacker at Tom Thumb for the sheer joy of socializing and bringing smiles to the faces of his customers. Marilyn was a gracious host, a good cook and a doting mother. She would go out of her way to help others. The two made an amazing pair. They held their 50th wedding anniversary on December 28, 2003 at the Melrose Hotel, the same place where they had their wedding reception some five decades earlier. When asked at the time what had kept their marriage so strong, Marilyn graciously responded that it took some luck and some work, but trust and discussion were key.
Illness took Marilyn too early. She passed on July 16, 2010, about two weeks before her first granddaughter was born. Although pained by his loss, Gus survived to see his grandson's high school graduation and the birth of his second granddaughter. He was also able to take a few family vacations. We are extremely grateful for the extra time we've shared with Gus and the memories will not be forgotten, but we recognize by his passing on the 16 of September that it was time for him to join the love of his life.
We are comforted that Gus and Marilyn will now be buried alongside each other. May God watch over them and bring them eternal peace.
Smile by Nat "King" Cole
Smile though your heart is aching
Smile even though it's breaking
When there are clouds in the sky, you'll get by
If you smile through your fear and sorrow
Smile and maybe tomorrow
You'll see the sun come shining through for you
Light up your face with gladness
Hide every trace of sadness
Although a tear may be ever so near
That's the time you must keep on trying
Smile, what's the use of crying?
You'll find that life is still worthwhile
If you just smile
