Gladys was an avid gardener who like her father, had a green thumb and a love for roses. She was a voracious reader, and a talented knitter who knitted sweaters for all her children, some of whom loved them, others not so much. She was a keen sports enthusiast which she imparted onto her children. Gladys enjoyed playing tennis in her younger years and formed lifelong friendships during this time. Always beautiful and glamorous, if she wasn’t found in a department store, she could be found in the nail or hair salon. Even with all her interests, she found time to enjoy a working career that spanned fifty-three years, retiring due to COVID at age seventy-nine.
Gladys converted to Catholicism and remained devout in her beliefs until her death. She was instrumental in teaching the family the importance of the Church and liked nothing better than to attend Mass. In her later years she enjoyed greeting the parishioners as they entered church.
She was a wonderful mother to her three children, prioritizing their education, and championing their interests and passions; she was always present. No greater proof of her love was sacrificing a very comfortable life and successful career in South Africa, to follow her children and grandchildren to America with her beloved husband of fifty-nine years. Jimmy was the love of her life, and this move was made a little easier because of their enthusiasm for travel and adventure to faraway places.
Gladys will be greatly missed by all who knew her. She was preceded in death by her husband James Patrick Flynn, parents John Barton and Emily Mary Gething, sisters Sheila Pickering and Joan Rowe, brother Ronald Gething and grandson Nicholas James Gould. She is survived by her daughter Lynda McInnes, son Patrick (Paddy) Flynn (Karen), daughter Alison Axon (Mark), grandson Shaun Gould (Sarah), Granddaughter Kerry-Anne Guessford (Troy), grandson Dean Gould (Hope), grandson Dillon McInnes (Amy), granddaughter Sarah McInnes and great grandchildren Natalie, Abigail, Emma, Madelyn, Claire, Conner, Wesley, Edwin, Sebastian, Nolan, Bonnie and her sister Brenda Strydom.
