Born Aug 12, 1922 in Carterville MO. Passed away Mar 8, 2013. Services will be held at 2:00, Sunday, March 17, 2013 at Sparkman Crane Funeral Home, followed at a later date by burial with full military honors at the National Cemetery, Grand Prairie TX. Mr. Sapp was the fourth of eight children born to Louis and Clara Sapp. He joined the Missouri Guards while a senior at Carterville MO High School at age 17 in 1940. Soon after, the unit was ordered to active duty and on Sept 16, 1940 they left by train for Camp Hulen; the first station that turned out to be the beginning of a life long association with the US Army. Enlisting as a Private, he progressed in rank to Sgt. before being commissioned as a 2nd Lieutenant in 1943, eventually attaining his retirement rank of Lt. Colonel. His service included combat in Europe during WW2 where he earned the combat infantry badge, two Bronze Stars; one for Valor. Col. Sapp is survived by his wife, Rita, of 62 years; daughters Jan Sapp, Tricia Burns, 5 grandchildren, Leann Bach, Lara Tillman, Staci Satterfield, Tommy Burns and Michael Burns; 10 great grandchildren; sister Vera; and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceded in death by daughters Ann Barker and Gayle Humphrey and one great grandchild; three brothers, Earl, Bud, Jack; three sisters, Lorraine, Laura and Emma.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the 1st Methodist Church of Athens TX or a charity of your choice.
