Flo was born in Pittsburgh, PA on December 30, 1931 to Mildred and Joseph Gregor. She grew up in West Deer Township in Allegheny County and graduated from West Deer High School in 1950. Her first job was at the Five & Dime. Later, she worked as a typist for an insurance company in downtown Pittsburgh. Occasionally, Flo would call in sick to spend the day with a gentleman of whom she was quite smitten, Frank.
Flo later married Frank Halovanic, Sr. of Etna, PA on October 6, 1951. The couple had 4 children and in 1965, she moved with her family to Chapel Downs, a community in Dallas, TX where she would call home for 54 years. In addition to raising her children, Flo was an office administrator for the chemical company W. R. Grace & Co. for 10 years where she prepared classified documents for the once Fortune 100 worldwide conglomerate.
Flo was a longtime parishioner of St. Monica Catholic Church. She loved to entertain her large extended family year-round and on warm days, the swimming pool in the backyard was the main attraction. She would host her Bunco girlfriends and enjoy playing games into her final days. When Flo moved to Briarview Senior Living in 2019, she made many new friends with whom she’d play Rummikub and was even a frequent BINGO winner. Additionally, Flo had a great admiration for (and collection of) accessories.
Above all, she will forever be remembered as a lifelong caregiver. Flo devoted her life to caring for her family members in their final seasons of life: her mother-in-law, father, mother, brother-in-law, husband and son. The goodness she put out into this world served her well, as she was blessed with family who ensured her own final season to be a reflection of her years of selflessness. Flo loved her family fiercely and leaves a beautiful legacy in the generations to follow.
Flo is preceded in death by her husband Frank, Jr. Halovanic; son Frank Halovanic, III; grandson Daniel Halovanic; and parents Mildred Szymik and Joseph Gregor.
Flo is survived by daughter Janet (David) Nienhiser; son Daniel Halovanic; son John (Marianne) Halovanic; 12 grandchildren; 18 great grandchildren; sister Irene Mink; and brother Joseph (Laraine) Gregor.
