She was born on April 9th, 1930, in Granada, Mississippi. Erlene is preceded in death by her husbands Richard Zeigler Hammett and Jim Conley and her close friend Laymon Walker; her sons Joseph Mark Hammett and David Allen Hammett; her siblings Nancy Huffman & Fred Milton Leverette. She is survived by her sister Barbara Chrestman; her son, Rick Hammett and wife Linda; her daughter, Paige Masters & fiancé Brooks Gist; her grandsons, Mark Allen & Michael Hammett, Trevor & Zachary Masters; great grandchildren, Hayes Hammett and Ruby Hammett.
Erlene had multiple acts in life, she obtained her nursing degree ( R.N.) in Greenwood, Mississippi, where she married Richard Hammett. They moved to Dallas, TX, in 1957. Erlene raised 4 kids at home before she found her passion as a charismatic entrepreneur selling Swipe, the miracle cleaner that according to her, “takes the rubbing out of scrubbing, leaving more time for loving.” In 1984 Erlene founded L’Paige Cosmetics, where she introduced “the green color changing lipstick” named after her daughter Paige.
Erlene is remembered for her larger than life personality, her energy kept any room she entered lit. She loved traveling, the latest fashion, looking for treasures with her metal-detector, supporting her faith with her community at Park Cities Baptist Church, supporting her grandchildren at sporting events, spending time with her friends and family, playing dominos (Mexican-train specifically), but most of all- she loved connecting with people over the sale of a product she believed in because she believed in herself.
We extend or appreciation to Faith Presbyterian Hospice for their help in Erlene’s last days but most of all we would like to express our love and deepest gratitude to Erlene’s angels, Katherine & Natalie Owens. Katherine and Natalie acted as Erlene’s caregivers and have become a part of our family, their love for Erlene allowed her last decade to be more than comfortable as she navigated her fight with Alzheimer’s disease.
Funeral Service will be held at 3:00 pm on Tuesday, February 4, 2020, at Sparkman/Hillcrest Funeral Home, followed by interment at Hillcrest Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the Alzheimer’s Foundation of America or the Alzheimer's Association.
