Elbert Hampton Lewis, M.D.

Elbert Hampton "Bert" Lewis, M.D., loving husband, father, stepfather and talented physician, passed away on May 12, 2022, surrounded by his loving family. Bert was born on January 2, 1929, to James Ray and Ethel Evelyn Lewis in Dallas, Texas. His father worked extremely hard to become an attorney and his mom also worked numerous jobs to provide an environment that emphasized education as their highest priority. They raised their family and prospered in Denton, Texas. Bert was taught the value of hard work and quickly became a super star in the classroom. He graduated from Denton High School at the age of sixteen, where he played football and basketball along with membership in academic activities. Bert enrolled in college and later, after his medical school education, he completed his Bachelor of Science degree in what is now called the University of North Texas in Denton.

After only two years in college, Bert was admitted to the University of Texas Southwestern Medical School in Dallas, Texas, in 1948. After medical school, he started his rotating internship at Mount Sinai Medical Center in Miami Beach. He found his passion while training there in the field of surgery. Thus, Dr. Lewis applied and was accepted to a General Surgery residency back in Dallas. His general surgery training took place at the old Gaston Episcopal Hospital and the Dallas Veterans Administration Hospital. Upon graduation, he started and enjoyed a private practice in general surgery from 1958 to 1979. During this time, he had two children, Carole Ann Lewis and Daniel Philip Lewis, and they lived in Oak Cliff. He was also in the U.S. Naval Reserve from 1959 to 1964 at Carswell Naval Base in Ft. Worth.

Dr. Lewis decided to expand his surgical expertise, so he applied for a plastic surgery residency and was accepted and graduated from the University of Missouri under Dr. Charles L. Puckett. Bert then started his private practice in Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery at numerous hospitals in Dallas until he retired. For two years during this time, he was in the U.S. Air Force Reserve where he was promoted to the rank of Lt. Colonel.

Bert married the love of his life, Nancy, in 2002. They enjoyed 20 years of married life faithfully attending Highland Park United Methodist Church, traveling together, dancing and playing golf. He will be greatly missed by family, friends and many patients who loved him dearly.

He is survived by his wife Nancy Lewis, his son Daniel Philip Lewis and his mother Ann Lewis, stepdaughters and sons-in-law Suzette and Dr. Howard Derrick, Stephanie and Dr. Hunt Neurohr, Dr. William Carpenter and his wife Cindy, along with numerous step-grandchildren and step-great-grandchildren.

Dr. Elbert Lewis was preceded in death by his daughter Carole Ann Lewis, brother James Lewis, sister Wynona Lewis Stoltzfus, parents James and Ethel Lewis, grandparents Francis Mae and Hal Lawrence, cousin Jim Lewis and stepdaughter Sheri Scholz Carpenter.

Dr. Elbert Lewis; memorial service will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 21, 2022, in the chapel of Sparkman/Hillcrest Funeral Home on Northwest Highway.
