He was born in Durham, North Carolina on June 3rd, 1935. He graduated from Needham Broughton High School in neighboring Raleigh and attended the University of North Carolina, where he graduated with Phi Beta Kappa Honors in 1957. That same year he began a tour with the U.S. Marine Corps, attaining the rank of First Lieutenant.
Following military service, Don joined Exxon Corporation (now Exxon Mobil), at its Baton Rouge, Louisiana Refinery, in 1960. In the ensuing 34 years, he held a variety of positions in the fields of accounting, finance, and computer systems. In 1986, Don was appointed Vice President and Controller of the corporation with responsibility for worldwide financial reporting, accounting policy and procedure, internal audit, and systems of internal control. At the time of his retirement in 1994, Don was a member of the American Petroleum Institute, the Financial Executive Institute, and a member of the advisory council of the University of Texas at Dallas, School of Management.
Surviving are his beloved wife of 68 years, Judy; daughter, Sharon Oberholtzer and her husband Mark; son, Martin and his wife, Judy; three grandchildren, Daniel, Mallory, and Joanna; and three great-grandchildren, Raelynn, Maia, and Bryce.
A private graveside service for the family will be held on Sunday, November 5, 2023, at the Sparkman/Hillcrest Mausoleum and Memorial Park.
