On Sunday morning our David just shot right out of here and into the presence of Jesus. Even as our hearts are breaking over losing him we rejoice in knowing that his suffering is over and he is totally joyful in the midst of an awesome family reunion. He is undoubtedly dancing and laughing all over heaven.
David was born in Dallas, TX as the first son of Edward Robert "Sonny" Shafer and Frances Brown Shafer. He is survived by his loving wife, Linda, his children Karen & husband, Mathew Helget, Robert Shafer and Michael Shafer and his grandson, Joshua Helget. He was pre-deceased by his father in November 2007. He is also survived by his mother, Frances Shafer, his older sisters Sharon & husband, Keith Williams of TX, Lurlene Madsen of CT, his younger brothers Ronnie & wife, Kem Shafer of TX and Gary & wife, Kristi Shafer of TX, as well as a large extended family and scores of friends.
David Shafer was one of the most incredible men we've ever known. He was a man of integrity and honor who went out of his way to help anyone in need. A tireless champion of the underdog. David was a loving and devoted husband and father. He was a greatly loved alumni parent at Bryan Adams High School, from which each of his three children graduated. He was a man well-loved and respected in his large family, his community and in the world of pet rescues. David was a man who did more and contributed more and accomplished more from his wheelchair than any ten ordinary men put together. A man with a heart as big as Texas and a wonderful sense of humor. We are all much better people for having David in our lives all these years. His passing has left an enormous hole in our hearts and our lives. One day we'll once again throw our arms around him "up yonder" at that River of Life. I lieu of flowers memorial donations may be made n David's name to J.P. Chase Bank (Ferndale location) where a fund has been established to fund research for Acinic Cancer.
