With deep sadness we share that Charles Barrett “Barry” Hoffman passed away peacefully but unexpectedly at his home in Dallas on Thursday, May 26. He was 79. Barry was born in Dallas, TX on March 24, 1943 to Merwin “Grumpy” and Gerry Hoffman. He attended Bryan Adams High School in Dallas, TX until moving with his family to New York when he was 17. He graduated from White Plains High School in 1961.
Professionally, Barry was a journalist, editor, and communications executive. During his 50 years in news, he worked as a reporter and editor for major news organizations including the New York Times Tribune, WNEW Radio in New York City, and the United Press International Audio Network News Service. He held top editorial and general management positions with Gannett and Times Mirror and was past president of the New York State Press Club. Colleagues describe him as someone who loved the business and had the pulse of the news.
Barry was a founding member and partner of HealthDay, one of the world’s largest daily internet health and medical news services.
Barry was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army, serving in Vietnam from 1968-69 as a broadcast specialist and combat reporter. Recently he copy edited a Vietnam War-themed novel.
After retirement Barry returned to his beloved Texas where he served on the Board of the Press Club of Dallas and president of the Prestonwood Rotary Club. He taught at Dallas College Brookhaven Campus and took up acting.
Throughout his life Barry was an avid learner, curious about everything and everyone. He loved people, his family, and his friends above all. He was a father, grandfather, musician, actor, teacher, mentor, author, sports fan, and dog and music enthusiast. He inspired those he knew and will be forever loved, cherished, and missed by all.
He leaves behind his beloved partner Nicole Hansard, sister Karen Parker (Arthur), Daughters Jennifer Jones (Joel) and Alison Hoffman (Robert) (from previous marriage to Joyce Hoffman), grandchildren: Ethan, Rebecca, Elizabeth; niece Deborah Cantor (Larry) and nephew David Parker, his lifelong best friend Eddie Mason, and treasured cousin Max S “Sonny” Friedman, and extended family Angela and Blake Asel, Alexandra and Avery. Barry will live in all our hearts and memories forever.
