surrounded by her family. Born Dec. 1, 1944, in Seminole TX, Nickey was a 1963 graduate of Odessa High

School. Four years later, she earned a degree from Texas Woman’s University School of Nursing. An exemplary student, she was named to “Who’s Who in

American Colleges and Universities.” While at TWU, Nickey met her husband-to-be, a student at University of Texas Southwestern Medical School; they became Dr. and Mrs. J.M. Gilbert on Feb. 11, 1968. Work, community service and raising a family occupied the Gilberts for the next

several decades. They lived, worked and practiced in Dallas, El Paso, Arlington and Mansfield.

Nickey’s many involvements included leadership in the National Council of Jewish Women and Dallas’ Temple Emanu-el. In Junior League of Arlington Sustainers, avid reader Nickey was the founder and leader for two decades of the popular “Bookworms” reading group, which has grown from a handful to more than 50 participants.

The Gilbert family enjoyed many active vacations together—hiking, biking, skiing, plus special times in Puerto Rico. Professional sports—the Cowboys, Mavericks and Rangers—brought the family together frequently. Along with J.M, Nickey was a regular spectator on numerous sports fields and at dance recitals, as they enjoyed their five grandchildren. “She will be missed” is a giant understatement when it comes to this very special gal. Nickey’s sincere loving concern—always putting others first— plus her sense of humor, which she never lost during two years of frequent discomfort, drew people to her. Observing her in many hospital situations during the last two years made it difficult to differentiate the patient from the caregiver.

Survivors include Dr. J.M. Gilbert, her husband of 49 years; son Cory and his wife, Stephanie, and their children, Brett, Brady and Brooke; son Jeremy and his wife, Anne, and their children, Randall and Marie; daughter Monique Gilbert; sister Faye Evans; and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents, Cecil and Trelma Tripp Wolf; and sister Mary Lou Wolverton.

After a private burial at Ahavath Shalom, Fort Worth, a memorial service for family and friends will be April 4, Tuesday, 11 a.m., at Temple Emanu-El, 8500
