Brenda J. Stubel was born September 2, 1940, in Detroit, Michigan, and passed away September 26, 2017, after a courageous battle with cancer. Brenda graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a degree in architecture and began her career with a fellowship to study housing in Bogota, Columbia. Upon her return to Dallas, Brenda worked for the City Planning Department, then became partner/owner in several architectural firms, among them Rossetti Associates and Corgan Associates. Brenda specialized in design and project management, utilizing her talents to add detail and beauty to commercial projects such as the DFW, Austin, and Miami International Airport terminals and facilities. She also managed projects for corporate campuses, hotels, mixed-use development and retail centers. Her glass tile murals for the Sanger-Harris facades of Six Flags Mall and Valley View Mall were featured in the December 2016 edition of D Magazine.
Brenda realized her responsibility as one of the first female architects in Dallas to pave the way for younger women. She was a long-time member of Zonta International, an organization dedicated to advancing the status of women. Her many exceptional accomplishments led to her being chosen the 2012 NAPW Professional Woman of the Year.
Brenda loved all arts and supported the Dallas Museum of Art, the Dallas Arboretum, Theatre 3, The Dallas Opera, and Voices of Change. If there was music, Brenda was there. Her passion for music began at home with her parents who played professionally. Brenda was a founding member and served multiple terms as President of the Dallas Symphony Chorus. She enjoyed singing and traveling the world with the Chorus over several decades.
Brenda was a member of St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church and the Oratio Choir, and the Music and Drama Guild. She sang and was set designer for several liturgical operas. Brenda has been involved with the Church Music Institute in establishing a lectureship honoring St. Michael’s former music director, Dr. Paul L. Thomas. Brenda also sang and enjoyed fellowship with the Preston Hollow Presbyterian choir.
Brenda is preceded in death by her parents Ann L. and A. Martin “Marty” Stubel, and survived by her cousins Betty Ann Trampe and Eric J. Kleiner.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, October 12, 2017, at 4:00 p.m., at St. Michael and All Angels Episcopal Church chapel, 8011 Douglas Ave., Dallas, TX. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Dallas Symphony Chorus.
