Betty Jean Smith Owens, age 91, of Alba, passed away on Sunday, July 14, 2024. She was born July 6, 1933 in Palmer, Texas to George Dewey and Mary (Hinson) Smith. She had four siblings, 2 sisters, Wanda Coffey and Margie Anderson and two brothers, Dewey Glenn Smith and one that died as an infant Charlie Lee Smith. While attending Lancaster High School, her best girl friend introduced her to the love of her life, Charlie Francis Owens, who she married on April 14, 1951. While living in Lancaster, Betty and Charlie completed their family with two children. Betty was a member of First Baptist Church in Lancaster and sang in the choir for many years. She also served in different officer positions in the Lancaster Chapter of the Eastern Star. As their children got older, Betty began working for and eventually retiring from the Dallas County Tax office.
Betty is survived by her son, Mike Owens of Waxahachie and daughter, Karen Spring and husband Bruce of Alba; grandchildren, Jeff (Kelsi) Owens of Waxahachie, Kyle Owens of Austin, Cody Spring of Frisco and Karissa Spring of Rockwall; great grandchildren, Cora and Maritza Owens of Waxahachie and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Charlie Owens; her parents Dewey and Mary Smith; two brothers, Charlie Lee Smith and Dewey Glenn Smith; two sisters, Wanda Coffey and Margie Anderson; two nieces, Mary Mahone and Glenda Hall.
