Bert Fields Jr.

Bert Fields, Jr. passed away on Saturday, Jan. 10, 2015. Bert was the quintessential Texas oilman, banker and rancher. His life’s stories and experiences are interwoven with the rich tapestry of Dallas’ history.

Bert was born in Dallas on Sept. 13, 1939, to Bert Fields, Sr. and Alyne Fields. Bert Fields, Jr. was just 23 when his dad passed away and he was thrust into the leadership role of his family businesses. Fortunately, Bert had been following his dad around the oilfields, on the ranch and in the bank for years, so he was prepared not only to run but to grow the family businesses. For Bert, running a business was not a vocation, but an avocation. He relished the challenge, and his inquisitiveness was insatiable. Under his leadership, the family businesses thrived. As an example, his beloved North Dallas Bank & Trust celebrated its fiftieth anniversary in 2011, with assets exceeding $1 billion. It is one of the largest and oldest privately-owned banks in Texas.

More important than the success of his business ventures was the manner in which he conducted his business affairs. He was a man of impeccable character, whose word was his bond. He was intensely loyal to his friends, who often sought his advice and comfort. In all matters he embraced a patient and long-term approach.

Bert will be missed and fondly remembered by his many friends, colleagues and family members.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Sandy Fields, and his sister, Jeanne Shelby. He is survived by numerous cousins, nieces and nephews.

A Memorial Service will be held at Sparkman Hillcrest Funeral Home at 2 p.m. on Friday, January 16, 2015. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to a charity of your choice.
