Alicia was raised in Matamoros, Mexico, where she met her lifelong love, Nicolas Munguia. They were married in Matamoros on February 10, 1952.
Alicia and Nicolas lived in Mercedes, and Ft. Worth before settling down in Dallas in 1956.
While Nicolas proudly worked as a tailor for Neiman Marcus for over 35 years, Alicia was an accomplished seamstress for Neimans, Lou Lattimore, and Rosemary Byrd. She was a perfectionist, and took great pride in her work. Her true passion; however, was children.
The Munguias raised three sons; Mario, Nick, and Carlos; and were instrumental in the upbringing of their firstborn grandson, Nicholas.
Longtime members of St. Monica’s Catholic Church, Alicia worked for 15 years in their afterschool program, shooting baskets with the kids, and watching over them with firmness and love.
In the 1980s, Alicia and Nicolas took up country western dancing. Several times a week they donned their western gear and headed to Belle Starr, where they sipped Sprites between two-stepping, waltzing, and impressing everyone with the schottische.
Alicia also loved line dancing, and several months ago still doing “the freeze” with her amazed caregivers.
She was small in stature, but there was nothing diminutive about Alicia Munguia. She was passionate, feisty, opinionated, and packed full of love. She was smart, and savvy, and could do anything she set her mind to do.
When Nicolas’s health declined, Alicia insisted on caring for him at home; confident, and rightfully so, that no one could do a better job than she. Each time he was hospitalized, Alicia spent every night with him in his room. They were married for 57 years.
Alicia is survived by Mario and Nita Munguia, Nick Munguia, Carlos and Susan Munguia, her grandchildren, Ethan Munguia, Zachary Munguia, Nicholas Munguia (Linda), Paul Munguia, Ben Munguia (Lauren), Julie Day (Tyler), Christian Munguia; great grandchildren, Andres Munguia, and Fielding Day.
The Munguia family invites you to join in remembering and celebrating the life of Alicia. The visitation will be held at Calvary Hill Funeral Home on Sunday, February 25, 2018 from 5:30 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., with the Holy Rosary being recited at 6:30 p.m. The Mass of Christian Burial will be held at the North Chapel of Calvary Hill at 2:00 p.m. in Monday, February 26, 2018, followed by the committal and entombment in St. John Mausoleum at Calvary Hill Cemetery.
