It is with great sadness that we share the passing of Alec Reid Becker, son of Jeff and Shelley Becker, and younger brother of Ryan. His smile lit up the room. Alec was born April 26, 2001, and raised in Dallas, Texas, and he left us too soon at age 18 by suicide in his family home on February 6, 2020. He was a treasured son, brother, grandson, nephew, cousin and devoted friend to all that knew him. Alec was a freshman at Washington University in St. Louis, and had graduated from Greenhill School, which he had attended since Pre-K. Alec was Co-President of his Upper School Honor Council, elected Captain of the varsity the swim team, an enthusiastic member of the school choir, and a devoted manager to the girls varsity softball team.
Alec was a blessing. He had amazingly close, supportive and loving friends and family, excelled at anything he cared about, and was always giving of himself to others. He was loved, admired and respected by so many. As his Greenhill teachers will attest, Alec was an engaged learner, an intellectual leader in the classroom, and a model citizen and friend in the community. It was a privilege to know him and a joy to be in his presence. But a concussion suffered during his junior year of high school either changed him or unleashed buried doubts of his self worth and took away from him the one thing he needed in life - the ability to feel a connection with others. He worked hard with amazing mental health professionals, and was helped by medication, which together added a wonderful year to his life, for which we will always be grateful. But Alec hid his pain, and he was not able to bring back what he had lost. Our hearts are forever broken. His loss from this world will be noticed.
Alec is preceded in death by his grandfather Lewis Lamark, with whom he had a special bond. He is also survived by his grandmother, Arlene Lamark, and his grandparents Robert and Jo Ann Becker; aunts and uncles Jodi and Donnie Hughes, Leslie and Steven Peskind, and cousins Connor and Braeden Hughes, Alyssa and Shane Grodin, Shannon and Zane Robinson.
Funeral services will be held Sunday, February 9th, at 1:30 pm at Temple Emanu-El in Dallas, followed by interment at Temple Emanu-El Cemetery at 3430 Howell Street.
